Color Fastness to Rubbing Test Guide

The document outlines procedures for testing the color fastness of textiles to rubbing. Specifically, it describes how to: 1) Prepare textile specimens for wet and dry rubbing fastness testing according to standard methods. 2) Use a crockmeter device to apply 10 cycles of rubbing pressure to specimens under wet and dry conditions. 3) Evaluate any color transfer from specimens to rubbing fabrics using gray scales to determine the resistance of the textile colors.

OBJECTIVE The objective of this test is to determine the resistance of color of textile goods and staining to other textile

goods to rubbing. Rubbing fastness is the resistance of color of textiles for transferring to the other fabric in contact. Wet rubbing fastness is the resistance of color of fabrics to transfer to other wet fabric. Dry rubbing fastness is the resistance of color of dry fabrics to transfer to other fabric. GOALS Able to prepare the specimen for determining of color fastness to rubbing. Able to use of crockmeter used for the test. Able to perform color fastness to rubbing test according to the standard method. Able to evaluate the results of color fastness to rubbing test with grey scale. REFERENCED STANDARDS TS EN ISO 105-X12 MATERIALS Cotton crocking fabrics (Properties: desized, bleached, without finishing material rubbing fabric), grey scale, water proof emery paper, Crockmeter (Properties: consisting of 16mm diameter of test finger with a downward force of 9 N and a hand operated or motorized mechanism providing 10 number of cycles in 10 seconds along 104 mm of length onto the uniformly located specimen PREPARATION OF THE SPECIMENS The test specimens are prepared in dimensions as 140 mm x 50 mm, two specimens for wet rubbing, and two specimens for dry rubbing. Long edge of the specimen must be in warp direction. The specimens must be conditioned at least 4 hours before the test. METHOD 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Preparation of the specimens for color fastness to rubbing according to the standard Conditioning of the specimens Loading of the specimen and test cloth to the crockmeter Running of the crockmeter and performing the test Taking the specimens out of the device Evaluation of the staining results by grey scale

Soft grounded water proof emery paper or porous wire piece is placed between the floor of the device and test specimens for preventing to come loose of the specimens. The test specimen is located with clamps on the floor of the device as the long side of the specimen being motion direction. Dry Rubbing : Dry crocking cloth is placed to the finger of crockmeter as being parallel to the specimen. Wet Rubbing : The crocking cloth is immersed to distilled water and after it picks up water as

100% of its weight, it is placed to the finger of crockmeter as being parallel to the specimen. The lever of the crockmeter is motioned for 10 turns as 10 times forward and 10 times backward. This motion is performed along 104 mm of the line by applying 9N pressure. The specimen and crocking cloth are taken out of the device and conditioned at least 4 hours under standard atmospheric circumstances. 3 crocking cloths are placed under the crocking cloth removed from the device and the staining degree is assessed according to grey scale.

Spinning rod The staining degree of tested specimen to the crocking cloth is evaluated according to grey scale. Two kinds of grey scales are used for rubbing fastness test. The first type is five scaled. 1 means the lowest fastness degree and the highest fastness degree is 5. The other grey scale is 9 scaled. The lowest and highest fastness degrees in this grey scale are the same as the first type. However, there are intermediate degrees between each degree. Thus, more sensitive assessment can be performed. The fastness values in 9-scaled grey scale is as following.

1 The lowest fastness value 1-2 2 2-3

3 3-4 4 4-5 5 The highest fastness value
