Problem Set 2 in Math Ed 809
Answer/Do the following. Show all necessary solutions. No valid solution, no credit points. (17
points each)
1. Determine if V = R2 is a vector space over R with respect to the operations: (a, b) + (c,
d) = (a + c, b + d) and k(a, b) = (k 2a, k 2b).
SOLUTION:
Given that V = R2
Operations (a, b) + (c, d) = (a + c, b + d)
k(a, b) = (k 2a, k 2b).
Here, vector addition is in standard operation.
V = R2satisfied all properties concerning vector addition.
u = (1, 1) ϵ R
2
Let k1 = 3
k2 = 4
Then (k1 + k2) u = (3 + 4) (1,1)
= 7(1,1)
= (72 . 1¿ (72 .1)
= (49 , 49)
Now k1u + k2u = 3(1,1) + 4(1,1)
= (9,9) + (16,16)
= (25, 25)
Hence, (3+4) (1,1) ≠ 3(1,1) + 4(1,1)
for all c, d ϵ R and u ϵ R
2
Thus, (c+d) u ≠ cu + du
Therefore, V is not a vector space.
2. Write the vector v = (2, -5, 3) in R3 as a linear combination of the vectors e1 = (1, -3, 2), e2
= (2, -4, -1), and e3 = (1, -5, 7).
SOLUTION
Given:
[] [] []
1 2 1
e1 = −3 , e2 = −4 , e3= −5
2 −1 7
write the vector v = (2,−5,3) in R3 as linear combination of vectors.

Consider the given vectors in R3
[] [] []
1 2 1
e1 = −3 , e2 = −4 , e3= −5
2 −1 7
Let ae1 + be2 + ce3 = v
a(1, -3, 2) + b(2, -4, -1)+ c(1, -5, 7) = (2, -5, 3)
a + 2b + c = 2 eq. 1
-3a - 4b - 5c = -5 eq. 2
2a - b + 7 = 3 eq. 3
(1) x (2) ⇒ 2a + 4b + 2c = 4
(3) ⇒2a - b + 7c = 3
5b – 5c = 1 eq. 4
(1) x (3) ⇒ 3a + 6b + 3c = 6
(2) ⇒-3a - 4b - 5c = -5
2b – 2c = 1 eq. 5
(4) x (2) ⇒ 10b - 10c = 2
(5) x (5) ⇒10b - 4b - 5c = -5
2b – 2c = 1 eq. 5
3. Let W be the subspace of R4 generated by the vectors (1, -2, 5, -3), (2, 3, 1, -4), and (3, 8,
-3, -5). Find a basis and the dimension of W.
4. Find a basis for R3 that contains the vectors v1 = (-1, 1, -1) and v2 = (1, 1, 0).
5. Let f: R2 → R2 be defined by . Is f a linear transformation? ) , () , (yx yx yxf
6. Let F: R3 R3 be the projection mapping into the xy plane, i.e., defined by F(x, y, z) = (x,
