XUNSTP: PROCESSING SESSION 1
Theme: “In loving me God calls me to reach out and participate in the world outside of
myself”
I. RATIONALE
The highlight of the formation that every Xavier University student has to go through
aside from developing academic competence in her/his discipline is to understand social
issues and concerns and gain significant experiences through societal engagement. The
Processing Session encourages the NSTP students to assess what has become of
her/him. Grounded in the principles and teachings of St. Ignatius, the processing
session underscores the dynamics of every person in a more contemplative manner for
her to have a better understanding of herself/himself and her/his actions, leading to a
stronger faith and personal relation with God.
II. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the processing session the students should be able to:
a. Identify personal attributes in relation to The First Principle and Foundation of St. Ignatius
of Loyola;
b. Practice discernment in understanding what is going on around the world and in their
hearts;
c. Relate personal values to their response to social issues and concerns.
Prayer Period 1: PRAYING OVER MY PERSONAL IDENTITY
Grace to beg for:
“My Lord and my God, I beg for the grace to know, love and accept myself as truly am,
realizing that my own giftedness is an invitation for it to be shared to others.
Prelude:
Begin by quieting yourself. Be comfortable. Notice of the place where you are now, your
posture must be conducive for prayer, be aware that God is around waiting for you. There
are two unequal parts of this prayer:
Begin by reading prayerfully the Principle and Foundation using Ignatian Meditation (25
minutes)
FIRST PRINCIPLE AND FOUNDATION
(An adaptation from St. Ignatius as paraphrased by David Fleming, SJ
from the beginning of the Spiritual Exercises)
The goal of my life is to live with you forever, to praise, reverence and serve you. You,
who love me, give me life. My own response to your love allows my life to flow into you
without limit.
All the things in this world are gifts from you, presented to me so that I can know you
more easily and make a return of love more readily. As a result, I appreciate and use all
these gifts of you insofar as they help me develop as loving persons. But if any of these
gifts become the center of my life, they displace you and so hinder my growth toward my
goal.
In everyday life, then, I must hold myself in balance before all these created gifts insofar
as I have a choice and are not bound by some obligation. I should not fix my desires on
health or sickness, wealth or poverty, success or failure, a long life or short one. For
everything has the potential of calling forth in me a deeper response to my life.
My only desire and my one choice should be this: “I want and I choose what better leads
to the deepening of God’s life in me”
III. ACTIVITY 1: Balik-Lantaw
