ENVIRONMENT

1. While some people consider global warming to be the most pressing environmental problem which
we have at the moment, others believe that deforestation has a more devastating impact on our world.

Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

2. The government should reduce the amount of money spent on local environmental problems and
instead increase funding into urgent and more threatening issues such as global warming.

To what extent do you agree?

3. With increasing populations and ever-growing urban centers, many countries are losing their natural
beauty spots.

What benefits are there to protecting places of natural beauty?

How can this be solved?

4. Although many people value their public parks, this space could be better used for other purposes
such as residential areas for the ever-growing population or to develop business and boost economies.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this?

5. With deforestation, urban development and illegal hunting, many animal species are becoming
endangered as they lose their habitat and some are even threatened to the point of extinction.

Do you think it is important to protect animals?

What measures can be taken to deal with this problem?

6. Global warming is one of the biggest threats to our environment.

What causes global warming?

What solutions are there to this problem?

7. Both governments and individuals are spending vast amounts of money protecting animals and their
habitat. This money could be better spent dealing with fundamental issues in society such as poverty
and health care.

To what extent do you agree?

8. As a result of growth in some urban centers, the environment in those cities is deteriorating.

How could this issue be tackled by both the government and individuals?

9. Some people think that current environmental issues are global problems and should therefore be
dealt with by the government while others believe that these problems can only be tackled by
individuals.

Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

10. Global environmental issues are the responsibility of rich nations not of poorer nations.
Do you agree with this opinion?

11. Many people believe that global environmental problems should be dealt with internationally rather
than domestically.

What is your opinion?

12. Many animals are being hunted to the brink of extinction in order to fulfill the demand and greed of
mankind for decorative purposes as well as for other reasons such as traditional medicine.

How could this be solved?

13. Some industrialised countries have serious environmental problems. The damage to the
environment is an inevitable result when a country tends to improve the standard of living.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

14. Some people believe that air travel should be restricted because it causes serious pollution and will
use up the world's resources.

Do you agree or disagree?

15. Water resources around the world are falling deficient.

Analyse the possible reasons and provide your suggestions.

Governments can impose stricter urban planning regulations, promote green infrastructure, implement emission controls, and support public transportation to reduce urban environmental degradation . Individuals can contribute by adopting sustainable lifestyles, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, using public transit, and participating in community greening efforts.

Governments should balance prioritizing global warming solutions with addressing local environmental issues, as both are interconnected and affect quality of life . Global warming has far-reaching impacts, warranting substantial investment, while ignoring local issues could lead to immediate ecological and health problems. An integrated approach that leverages global warming efforts to also benefit local environments might be the most effective strategy.

Protecting endangered species is crucial for maintaining biodiversity, ecological balance, and preventing the loss of irreplaceable genetic resources . Proactive measures include strengthening legal protections for habitats, expanding nature reserves, integrating wildlife corridors into urban planning, and promoting sustainable land management practices that mitigate the impacts of deforestation and urban development.

Arguments for deforestation being more devastating include its immediate effects on biodiversity loss, disruption of water cycles, and contribution to climate change by reducing carbon sinks. On the other hand, arguments for global warming being more critical highlight its widespread and ongoing effects on global climate patterns, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events . Personally, I find deforestation more convincing due to the irreversible damage to ecosystems and biodiversity which also exacerbates global warming.

Protecting natural beauty spots is crucial for biodiversity conservation, ecological stability, and providing recreational, aesthetic, and economic benefits through tourism . Strategies to prevent their loss include developing stringent zoning laws, promoting eco-friendly urban planning, increasing public awareness, and providing incentives for conservation efforts to ensure these areas are preserved despite urban expansion.

Addressing illegal hunting and trade requires international cooperation to enforce stringent anti-poaching laws, support wildlife inventory monitoring, and dismantle trafficking networks . Public education on the ecological and cultural importance of species conservation, along with promoting alternative livelihoods for those involved in hunting, can also mitigate the threats to endangered species.

The argument hinges on prioritization; some believe conservation funds could tackle immediate human needs, while others argue that ecological health indirectly supports human welfare, as ecosystems provide essential services that affect agriculture, health, and climate stability . A balanced approach could involve investing in solutions offering dual benefits, such as projects improving both human and environmental health.

Global warming is primarily caused by greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, and industrial processes . Solutions include transitioning to renewable energy sources, enhancing energy efficiency, reforesting, developing carbon capture technology, and implementing international agreements like the Paris Accord to reduce emissions.

Managing environmental problems internationally acknowledges their cross-border nature and enables a coordinated response, providing economies of scale and consensus on standards . However, domestic policies are essential for addressing specific national conditions and public engagement. A hybrid approach, where international policies guide and support national strategies, might offer the most comprehensive solution.

Public parks provide significant ecological, social, and health benefits by offering green spaces for leisure and recreation, improving air quality, and serving as habitats for urban wildlife . Converting them into residential or commercial spaces is disputed due to the potential loss of community well-being, increased urban heat, and diminished quality of life. The debate centers around the need to balance development with maintaining green spaces for future generations.
