Agilent 8564EC Service Note Guide

This document recommends a modification to correct manufacturing defects in certain Agilent 856xEC Series Portable Spectrum Analyzers. The modification involves adding grounding wires to inductors on the A5 IF assembly board, which is not making proper ground connections. This is causing error messages related to the A4 Log Amp board. To fix it, technicians should remove shielding from the A5 board, locate the inductors, solder one end of included grounding wires to each inductor and the other end to the board's ground plane. This should solve problems of error codes 561, 562 and 565.

8150-4222 30 Gauge Wire 4

Situation:
For the instruments specified above, inductors within the A5 IF assembly are not making good
connections to ground thereby giving error messages related to the A4 Log Amp board. Error
numbers that appear in the lower right-hand corner of the screen on account of this problem are errors
561, 562, and 565.

Solution/Action:
If the serial number of the instrument applies to the ones above, the following butch may solve the
problem. Remove the shielding from the A5 IF assembly. Locate the inductors, and according to the
attached photograph, insert and solder one end of the 8150-4222 wire into the hole connecting to the
inductors and solder the other end to the ground plane on the front layer of the board. Do this for each
inductor. See attached picture, the arrows point to where the jumpers are attached.

Add jumpers according to the picture above.

Common questions

Powered by AI

The affected series of instruments are the 856xEC Series Portable Spectrum Analyzers, specifically including models such as the 8564EC-04 and others listed in duplicate service notes .

The 8150-4222 wire is used to reestablish grounding connections for inductors in the A5 IF assembly. One end of the wire is soldered into a hole connecting to the inductors, and the other is soldered to the ground plane on the circuit board, ensuring proper grounding .

The procedure involves: removing the shielding from the A5 IF assembly, locating the inductors, inserting and soldering a 8150-4222 wire from the hole contacting inductors to the ground plane, and repeating this for each inductor, as guided by a photograph .

If the recommended modifications are not performed, the spectrum analyzers may continue to produce error messages, specifically errors 561, 562, and 565, due to poor grounding connections. This can lead to inaccurate readings or a failure in proper instrument operations, ultimately affecting performance and potentially leading to further hardware issues .

The term 'scrap' in the service note indicates that parts which have been replaced or deemed redundant during repair should be discarded rather than reused. This typically suggests the parts are no longer reliable or fit for use in maintaining the instrument .

Grounding issues in the A5 IF assembly of the spectrum analyzer are indicated by error messages that display error numbers 561, 562, and 565 in the lower right-hand corner of the screen .

The modification is estimated to take 1.5 hours of labor .

Immediate service actions are recommended to resolve grounding issues within the specified instruments, which cause error messages that impair the proper functioning of the device. This is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency and preventing further technical malfunctions .

Attaching jumpers as indicated by the provided picture in the service note helps correct the grounding issue of inductors within the A5 IF assembly, thereby resolving error messages and ensuring the proper operation of the spectrum analyzer .

The recommended action to address the connection issues with inductors in the A5 IF assembly involves removing the shielding from the assembly, locating the inductors, and inserting one end of a 8150-4222 wire into a specified hole. The other end should be soldered to the ground plane on the front layer of the board. This process should be repeated for each inductor, as indicated by the attached photograph .
