EDC1000 - Topic 1 Module (S2 2023)

Welcome to EDC1000 - Introduction of the Profession. This introductory module will encourage you to think about teaching in a new
era, and to consider the concept of 21st Century Learning Skills. The module will also provide you with information about the learning
activities that you will complete each week of the course (i.e., 5 Phases of Learning).

How will you learn in this course?

Mark Oliver

"The capacity to learn is a gift, the ability to learn a skill, the willingness to learn a
choice." - Brian Herbert

5 Phases of Learning
Each week you will complete independent and collaborative activities that develop your understanding of the topic concepts. The activities are
based on a 5 Phase Model of Learning that will help you to acquire, analyse and apply key course concepts. The 5 Phases are explained below.

1 During the Preview phase you will review the Topic Module and Topic Overview video - the preview phase will help you to
prepare for learning (think of this like a roadmap for learning).

2 During the Read & Respond phase you will work your way through the weekly reading from the textbook, reading sections and
stopping to respond to questions that foster critical thinking (you will share your responses on the Read & Respond forum).

3 In the Skill Development phase you will complete an individual activity that will develop your academic skills - after
completing these interactive media presentations you will write a reflection about your learning (you will submit your
reflections as part of assignment three).
4 During the Interact phase you can connect to a live tutorial (in person or online), and apply your understanding of the course
materials (we will be encouraging you to debate).

5 In the Reflect & Apply phase you will reflect on your conceptual development and apply your understandings while preparing
your assignments (a little bit of assignment prep each week makes it easy).

Teaching is a complex process. Becoming a teacher is a life's journey (Allen & White,
2018).

Teaching in the 21st Century

Teaching has certainly changed from the profession it was 20 years ago. While aspects of the profession are constant (e.g., students learn
information), there are changes to the profession that have been influenced by a number of factors. In this module you will explore what it
means to Teach in a New Era, and how teachers are required to foster the 21st Century Learning Skills that students will require in the future.
During this module you will:

1 Identify key concepts of 21st Century teaching and learning;

2 Develop an understanding of teacher's work in Australia;

3 Develop an understanding of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs);

4 Develop your critical reading and thinking skills;

5 Develop your time and study management skills; and

6 Review the requirements for Assignment 1 and commence drafting Section 1.

Read & Respond

Mark Oliver

Critical reading is a more active way of reading.

Overview
During the Read & Respond phase you will work your way through the assigned weekly chapter from the textbook. You will read sections of the
chapter and then stop to respond to questions that foster critical reading skills. There are several important reasons why we ask you to read in
this manner:

1 Reading in chunks and actively reflecting on the content will help to promote your understanding and memorisation of key
concepts;

2 Developing your critical reading skills will enhance your critical thinking;

3 Sharing your responses to questions will foster collaboration with your peers, and promote a sense of belonging to a
community of learners.

Notes for Assignment 3

The final assignment for the course will require you to reflect on your learning across the semester. By recording your thoughts in the Read &
Respond forums, you will be "taking notes" that you will be able to search at the end of the semester (these will be a handy source of
information for Assignment 3). If you use references in your responses, this will also help you to compile references for assignment three (we
encourage you to include the full reference at the end of your forum post).
What is critical reading?

Critical Reading is a deeper and more complex engagement with a text. Critical reading is a process of analysing, interpreting and evaluating
the claims/arguments presented in text. When we read critically, we use our critical thinking skills to question both the text and our own reading

of it. To learn more about critical reading, please click on the link below:

Required Module Reading

This week you will read Chapter One of the Allen & White's (2021 or 2018) Learning to Teach in a New Era. As this is the first week of the
semester we have uploaded a copy of the chapter to the StudyDesk (see course readings). We are only able to upload one chapter of the textbook
due to copyright guidelines.
Let's start our reading

Click on the Start button below to work your way through the first chapter of the text. You will read extracts from the
chapter, and then will stop to record your responses to reflection questions in the Topic 1 Read & Respond forum.
Step 1

Reading Extract 1 (pp. 9-10)

Please read pages 9-10 of chapter one, and then stop to listen to the AITSL 21st Century Education video. After
watching the video, now consider the question listed below in bold, and record your response in the Reading
Response Discussion Thread (within Topic 1 Forum).

Please remember to include your response in the discussion thread that is related to your program (i.e., early
childhood, primary, secondary). You can find the forums in the Topic 1 area of the StudyDesk.

Based on your own experience, do you believe Australian school students are effectively taught to develop
knowledge and skills for the 21st Century (including critical thinking, creativity, presentation skills, finance
skills, digital literacy, technology skills)? Why, or why not?
Step 2

Reading Extract 2 (pp. 11-18)

Please read pages 11-18 of chapter one. After reading the "Interview with a Principal" extract on page 18, stop to
answer the question below in the Topic 1 Reading Response Discussion Thread. Please remember to include your
response in the discussion thread that is related to your program (i.e., early childhood, primary, secondary).

What skills do you think you need to be an effective teacher in the 21st Century? What personal qualities do you
think you will need? How might you develop these skills and qualities?
Summary
Complete the review of the remaining pages of Chapter 1. At the conclusion of your reading your might stop to
consider the following critical reading questions:

How well did the authors support key claims with evidence? Were points supported with credible literature? Or
was support for claims lacking?

Were the arguments presented in the text convincing? If not, how might this be improved?

Skill Development
Mark Oliver

Your future is created by what you do today. Time management is your tool for
shaping what you do today.

Overview
Developing your academic skills will promote your learning success, and foster your progression through the program. During the first week of
the course you will learn about approaches to time management, which is critical to organising your learning. Effective time management
consider all the responsibilities that you must juggle in your day-to-day life - family responsibilities, work, and study commitments. Developing

a weekly plan for your time, and using a daily list to write goals are two effective strategies for managing your time.

Please complete the following three steps in Skill Development phase of this topic.

1 Click on the link to access the Time Management Module

2 After you completing the module, please record your comments on the Time Management Collaboration Reflection padlet
(these will be good notes for Assignment 3).

3 Now write a brief 100 word reflection about: (1) what you learned about time management; (2) what challenges you may
experience with time management; and (3) what strategies your find work for you. Now share your reflection in the Topic 1
Learning Skill Reflection Discussion (within the Topic 1 Forum)

4 Please remember to save your learning skill reflection as this will be included in Assignment 3 (ePortfolio). You may like to use
your UDrive, a USQ cloud drive that is set-up for all USQ students. Click on the link below to learn about how to access your
UDrive account.

Reflect & Apply

Mark Oliver

We do not learn from experience ... we learn from reflecting on experience (John Dewey).

Reflecting on your learning

During the final phase of your learning for this topic, it is important to stop to think about:

1 What have your learned about the teaching profession during the topic? What surprised you? What else would you like to
know?

2 What did you learn about your approaches to learning and study? What aspect of your learning would you like to improve?

3 What goals have you set for next week to prepare for your first assignment task?

Share your reflections

Please share your reflection on the questions above in the Topic 1 Reflection Discussion (see Topic 1 Forum)
Congratulations - you have completed Topic 1 for EDC1000!
