Preference is an expression
used to express preference or
it can also be used to ask for
an opinion on something.
Preference in English
1. To compare activities, for
example:
- I prefer fishing to hiking.
2. To compare nouns, for
example:
- I prefer mangosteen to
mango.
To compare an activity, preference has
its own pattern which is divided into 4
patterns:
1. Prefer … to ….
2. Like … better than ….
3. Would prefer … rather than ….
4. Would rather … than ….
1. Prefer … to ….
– Subjek + prefer + V-ing + to + V-ing
Example:
I prefer staying at home to going out.
She prefers hanging out with you to
hanging out with me.
My father prefered reading the
newspaper to watching the TV at
that time.
2. Like … better than ….
– Subjek + like + V-ing + better than + V-ing
Example:
They like fishing better than hiking.
My mother like shopping better than
cooking.
Aurel and Nanda like studying better
than cheating while doing the exam.
3. Would prefer … rather than ….
– Subjek + would prefer + to infinitive + rather than + V-1
Example:
My uncle would prefer to go to the musuem rather
than go to the zoo.
I would prefer to do the dishes rather than do the
laundry.
She would prefer to do the housework rather than
do the homework.
4. Would rather … than ….
– Subjek + would rather + V-1 + than + V1
Example:
Ardy would rather work as a Manager than go into
business.
Siska would rather shop in the traditional market
than shop in the mall.
My friend would rather play the video game than
study for the exam tomorrow.
To compare a noun such as food etc,
preference also has its own pattern
which is divided into 4 patterns:
1. Prefer … to ….
2. Like … better than ….
3. Would prefer … rather than ….
4. Would rather … than ….
1. Prefer … to ….
– Subjek + prefer + noun + to + noun
Example:
I prefer Horror Movie to the romance
one.
She prefers novel to the comic.
My little sister prefer a cupcake to
rainbow cake.
2. Like … better than ….
– Subjek + like + noun + better than + noun
Example:
They like Smartphone better than
Computer.
My father like Pizza better than
meatball.
Most of my classmates like English
better than Mathematics.
3. Would prefer … rather than ….
– Subjek + would prefer + noun + rather than + noun
Example:
My uncle would prefer cap rather than jacket.
My aunty would prefer eyeglasses rather than
soft lens because it’s more comfortable

4. Would rather … than ….
– Subjek + would rather + noun + than + noun
Example:
Sasha would rather black hair than brown hair.
Tina would rather dress than skirt for the party.
Angga would rather rock music than pop music.
Conclusion
Regarding sentence patterns, you only need
to memorize the preference patterns for
