Cable Car Geometry Problem Set

The document contains 6 multi-step math word problems involving geometry concepts like triangles, angles, perpendicular lines, and rates. Dimensions and other values are given in each problem and the goal is to calculate unknown values like lengths, widths, distances, angles, or heights using trigonometric functions or relationships between sides and angles of shapes.

Problem Set (part 2)

1. If the length of a rectangle is 5 m less than twice the width, and the perimeter is 44 m
long, find its length and width.

2. Find the dimensions of a shipping box given that the length is twice the width, the height
is 8 inches, and the volume is 1,600 in3.
3. (Surveying) From a point 15 meters above level ground, a surveyor measures the angle
of depression of an object on the ground at 68°. Approximate the distance from the object
to the point on the ground directly beneath the surveyor.

4. Shown in the figure is the screen for a simple video arcade game in which ducks move
from A to B at the rate of 7.5 cm/sec. Bullets fired from point O travel 24 cm/sec. If a
player shoots as soon as a duck appears at A, at which angle should the gun be aimed in
order to score a direct hit?

5. As shown in the figure below, a cable car carries passengers from a point A, which is 1.2
miles from a point B at the base of a mountain, to a point P at the top of the mountain.
The angles of elevation of P from A and B are 21° and 65°, respectively.
(a) Approximate the distance between A and P.
(b) Approximate the height of the mountain.
6. The angle at one corner of a triangular plot of ground is 73°40’ and the sides that meet at
this corner are 175 feet and 150 feet long. Approximate the length of the third side.
