Understanding Eclipses and Satellites

The document defines several key terms: eclipse, launch, opaque, transparent, translucent, and satellite. It then provides examples to classify objects as transparent, translucent, or opaque. Diagrams illustrate the formation of solar and lunar eclipses. Artificial satellites are defined as man-made objects that orbit Earth, and four uses of artificial satellites are given: weather satellites, communication satellites, earth resource satellites, and spy satellites. Reasons are provided for a cockroach dying on the moon, satellites benefiting fishermen, and birds returning to nests during a solar eclipse.

New Terminology

1. Eclipse – phenomenon in which light from one heavenly body is blocked by another

2. Launch- send a ship or rocket for the first time into space

3. Opaque – objects that do not allow any light to pass through them

4. Transparent – objects that allow all light to pass through them

5. Translucent- objects that allow only little amount of light to pass through them

6. Satellite - a body revolving around a planet

Answer the following questions –

Q1. Classify the following into transparent, translucent and opaque objects.

1.

Transparent Translucent Opaque

Cellophane paper Butter paper Mirror

Air Frosted glass Book

Glass sheet Oily paper rubber ball

brick

stone

pen

earth

wood

Q2. Explain with the help of neat and well labelled diagrams the formation of solar and lunar
eclipse.

Ans. Solar eclipse- A solar eclipse occurs when the sun ,the moon and the earth are in a straight
line. The moon obstructs the path of the sunlight and its shadow falls on the earth. The people
living in the area where the shadow is formed cannot see the sun. It occurs only on a new moon
day.

ormation of Solar Eclipse

Lunar eclipse-Sometimes the sun, earth and moon are in a straight line. The shadow of the earth
falls on the moon .This is called lunar eclipse. A lunar eclipse occurs only on a full Moon night.

Formation of Lunar Eclipse

Q3. What is an artificial satellite? Write four uses of artificial satellites.

Ans. Satellites designed by man are called artificial satellites. They revolve around the earth in a
fixed orbit in the same manner as the moon.

Uses of artificial satellites-

1. Weather satellites are used for forecasting the weather of a place on the earth. They can
warn us about storms floods or cyclones. For example : ATS -6

1. Communication satellites relay the radio and television signals around the world and also
transmit telephone signals to different places. For example: APPLE and Intelsat Satellites

1. Earth Resource satellites are used to locate oil under the oceans find out about earth’s
vegetation and mineral resources. Example: Landsat.

1. Spy satellites gather information regarding the military movement of the enemy .For
example: EMISAT.

Give reasons-

1. A cockroach left on the moon surface died.

Ans. It is because there is no oxygen on the moon for the cockroach to breathe in.

1. Satellites are of great benefit to fishermen.

Ans. It is because weather satellites send us pictures showing formation of storms, cyclones and
clouds which can save the life of the fishermen.

[Link] a total solar eclipse , the birds return to their nests.

Ans. It is because during a total solar eclipse it becomes dark during the daytime. The birds
thinking it is night start returning to their nest.

Common questions

Design reflects purpose through payload specialization. Weather satellites include sensors for atmospheric data, while communication satellites host transponders for signal relay . Earth resource satellites are equipped with imaging instruments for geological surveys, while spy satellites integrate reconnaissance technology to gather intelligence data . These components are aligned with their functional objectives, dictating structural and technological design.

The moon lacks an atmosphere containing oxygen, which is essential for the respiration of most terrestrial life forms such as cockroaches. Without oxygen, they cannot survive, thereby necessitating life support systems for any prolonged presence on the moon .

Understanding eclipse mechanics can enhance strategic planning for space missions. Knowledge of celestial alignments aids in the launch timing and navigation to minimize risks like solar radiation during solar eclipses . It also provides insight into gravitational dynamics and planetary science, which can refine satellite orbit calculations and lead to improved models for predicting celestial phenomena impacting space travel.

The classification affects applications based on light passage. Transparent materials like glass allow full light transmission, useful for windows and lenses . Translucent materials such as frosted glass partially transmit light, providing privacy while maintaining light flow suitable for bathroom windows . Opaque materials like stones block light entirely, making them ideal for construction purposes where light blockage is needed .

Opacity determines material use; transparent materials are used in optics for lenses and glasses where full light transmission is essential . In architecture, transparencies are preferred for windows to enhance daylight use without barrier . Opaque materials are chosen for walls where privacy and structural integrity are priorities, blocking light passage entirely . This fundamental characteristic governs aesthetic and functional applications in design.

The principle is based on biotic reactions to environmental light changes. During a total solar eclipse, the abrupt transition to darkness confuses diurnal animals such as birds, who rely on light cues to determine day from night. The birds are thus prompted to return to their nests, interpreting the darkened skies as nighttime .

Yes, artificial satellites can be categorized by function. Weather satellites monitor climatic conditions and provide data on impending natural events . Communication satellites handle transmitting radio, television, and telephone signals globally . Earth resource satellites focus on mapping resources like oil and vegetation . Spy satellites are used for military and defense intelligence gathering . Each type serves a distinct purpose by carrying specific payloads designed for particular tasks.

Satellites are crucial for modern fishing as weather satellites forecast storms and cyclone formations through real-time images. This information is vital for fishermen to avoid hazardous weather conditions, thereby ensuring safety and reducing loss of life at sea .

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon, and Earth are aligned in a straight line, with the moon obstructing sunlight and casting a shadow on Earth. It occurs only on a new moon day, and during this time, areas on Earth covered by the moon's shadow cannot see the sun . In contrast, a lunar eclipse happens when the sun, Earth, and moon are aligned, with Earth casting its shadow on the moon. This can only occur on a full moon night .

Artificial satellites bring significant benefits across multiple sectors. Weather satellites provide critical data for forecasting and alerting about storms, floods, or cyclones, aiding in disaster preparedness . Communication satellites facilitate global media, broadcasting, and telephone transmissions, enhancing worldwide communication networks . Earth resource satellites help in locating natural resources and assessing vegetation and minerals, contributing to environmental and economic research . Spy satellites provide critical intelligence on military activities, advancing national security .
