Introductory Linear Algebra Course Guide

This document outlines the course information for MATH1141 Introductory Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry including the course code, title, class times, lecturer, and office hours. It also describes the assessment as two midterm tests worth 30% total and a final exam worth 70%. The document then covers topics in vector geometry including definitions, examples of vector operations and properties, and determining if vectors are parallel, orthogonal, or neither.

Question 1

Question 2
Position Vectors
Example:

Find 𝐴𝐵 where A is the point (2, −1) and B is the point (−1,3).
Examples:

1. In the triangle ABC, P is the midpoint of 𝐴𝐵 and Q divides 𝐵𝐶 in the ratio 2:1. Given that

𝑂𝐴 = 𝒂, 𝑂𝐵 = 𝒃 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑂𝐶 = 𝒄, find, in terms of 𝒂, 𝒃 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝒄, the position vectors of P, Q

and the midpoint of 𝑃𝑄.

2. The position vectors of A and B relative to the origin are 𝒂 and 𝒃 respectively. [Diagram]. The

point 𝑃 is on 𝑂𝐴 such that 𝑂𝑃 = 2 𝑃𝐴. The point 𝑀 is on 𝐵𝐴 such that 𝐵𝑀 = 𝑀𝐴.

a) Copy the diagram and complete to show the points 𝑃 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑀.

b) 𝑂𝐵 is extended to 𝑁 such that 𝑂𝐵 = 𝐵𝑁. Show the position of 𝑁 on your diagram.

c) Express in terms of 𝑎 and 𝑏 the vectors 𝐴𝐵, 𝑃𝐴 𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑃𝑀.

d) Use the vector method to prove that 𝑃, 𝑀 and 𝑁 are collinear.

e) Determine the vector 𝐴𝑁 𝑖𝑓 𝒂 = and 𝒃 =

Question 1:

Find the unit vector in the direction of 𝒗 = (3, −1,2), and verify that this vector has length 1.
Question 2:

i. 𝐴𝐵

ii. A unit vector in the direction 𝐴𝐵.

Distance Between two Vectors
Examples:

i. Find the distance between the points 𝑃(2, −1, −5) and 𝑅 4, −3,1 .
Dot Product/ Scalar Product
Angle Between two Vectors

Examples:

1. Consider the vectors 𝒖 = 2, −1,1 and 𝒗 = (1,1,2). Find 𝒖 C 𝒗 and determine the
angle 𝜃 between 𝒖 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝒗.

2. The vectors 𝒂 = 3𝑖 − 𝑗 + 2𝑘 and b = 𝐿𝑖 − 2𝑗 − 3𝑘 are perpendicular. Determine

the value of the constant L.
Properties of Dot Product
Example:

Determine if the following vectors are parallel, orthogonal or neither:

a) 𝒂 = (6, −2, −1) and 𝐛 = (2,5,2)

b) 𝒖 = 2𝑖 − 𝑗 and 𝐯 = − 𝑖 + 𝑗
