Space Mission Analysis and Design Guide

This document discusses the process of Space Mission Analysis and Design (SMAD). SMAD begins by defining broad mission objectives and constraints. Key steps in the SMAD process include estimating mission needs and requirements, characterizing the mission by defining alternative mission concepts and architectures, and identifying system drivers for each alternative. The overall goal is to develop a space mission design that achieves objectives at the lowest possible cost.

Space Mission Analysis and Design
SMAD:
 this processes / procedures which begins with one or more objective and
constraints to define space system by lowest possible cost.

 Broad objective and constraints are the key to this process.

 We must get the most performance for the moony spent and must require of
system only what it can reasonably achieve.

 We must be understanding mission to achieve this objectives like

communication, navigation, Observation and remote sensing, etc.

Using the Fire Sat example, we can define a set of mission objectives as:
 Define broad objectives and constraints.
Space Mission Process
 Estimate quantitative mission needs and requirements.
From Fire Sat example, we can define a set of mission requirements as:
 Functional Requirements:
 System performance to meet its mission objective.
 Operational Requirements:
 System operates.
 Users interact with the system to achieve the mission’s objectives.
 Constraints:
 limitations imposed on system designer by cost, schedule, and
implementation techniques.

Space Mission Process
 Characterize the mission :
 Define alternative mission concepts.
o This procedure begin wit developing alternative mission concepts.
o A mission concept or concept of operations is broad statement of
how mission will work in practice?
o It includes issues such as how the data will be sensed and delivered
to the end user? how the mission will be controlled? and the overall
mission timeline.
o These would also include different orbits or different wavelength
bands for fire detection that would require dramatically dissimilar
systems.
o From this questions we can define the elements of mission concept.
Space Mission Process
 Elements of the Mission Concept include:

 Data Delivery.

 Communications Architecture.

 Tasking, Scheduling, Control.

 Mission Timeline.
Space Mission Process
 Elements of the Mission Concept include:
 Data Delivery.
This element contain how data are generated or collected , distributed
and use.
(Using the Fire Sat example)
o How is imagery collected?

o How are forest fires identified?

o How are the results transmitted to the fire fighting teams on the
ground?
Space Mission Process
 Elements of the Mission Concept include:
 Communications Architecture.

This element contain how the various components of the system talk to
each other.

 Tasking, Scheduling, and Control.

This element contain how the system decides what to do in the long
term and the short term? Which sensors are active and when is data
being transmitted and processed?
Space Mission Process
 Elements of the Mission Concept include:
 Mission Timeline.

This element contain overall schedule for planning, building, deployment,

operations, replacement, and end-of-life
Space Mission Process
 Characterize the mission :
 Define alternative mission architecture.
o This step begin wit define alternate combinations of mission
elements or space mission architecture to meet the requirements
of the mission concept.
o The space mission architecture is the mission concept plus a
definition of each of the elements of the mission shown in the figure.

o A good way to begin this step is to look at the mission elements in

Figure and define what alternatives for each of them would best
meet mission objectives.

Space Mission Process
 Characterize the mission :
 Define alternative mission architecture.

o In any real system, many things influence overall cost, performance,

or the design of detailed components.

o However, these are influenced mainly by a relatively small number

of key parameters or components, called drivers.
Space Mission Process
 Characterize the mission :
 Identify System derivers for each.
o we identify the principal cost and performance drivers for each
alternative mission concept.
o For most space missions, system drivers include the number of
satellites, altitude, power, and instrument size and weight.
o By identifying the system drivers, we can concentrate our effort on
parameters having the most impact on the design and therefore on
the cost of the space mission.
o This method improves our chances of getting the best possible
design within the available budget.
Space Mission Process
 Characterize the mission :
 Characterize mission concepts and architectures.

o Characterizing the mission is the most costly step because it

requires the expertise of many people.

o Developing detail is always comforting in managing any design

process but, we must take care not to overdo detail.
