Breathing vs. Respiration Explained

The document defines key terms like respiration, aerobic respiration, anaerobic respiration, and breathing. It also defines vaccines. It then provides questions and answers about the differences between respiration and breathing, where respiration occurs in the body, similarities and differences between burning and respiration, why breathing and heart rate increase with exercise, parts of the body involved in air movement during breathing, the role of diaphragm and intercostal muscles in breathing, advantages of nose breathing over mouth breathing, differences between cough, cold and flu, their causes and prevention, and why smoking damages health.

Chapter- 2

Basic Definitions
Respiration:
Respiration is a process by which
energy is released from food
molecules inside the cells.
● Aerobic respiration occurs in the
presence of oxygen.
● Anaerobic respiration occurs in
the absence of oxygen.
Breathing:
The exchange of oxygen and
carbon dioxide between the
organism and environment inside
the lungs is called breathing.
Vaccine:
A preparation of dead or
weakened viruses which is used to
prepare the body
to fight certain diseases such as
polio and tetanus etc.

Questions And Answers
Q1. What is the difference
between breathing and
respiration?
Ans:
1-The exchange of oxygen and
carbon dioxide between the
organism and environment is
called breathing.
2- Breathing is a physical process.
3- Breathing occurs inside the
lungs.
While
1- Respiration is a process by
which energy is released from
food molecules.
2- Respiration is a chemical
process.
3- Respiration occurs inside the
cells.
******
Q2. In which parts of living
organisms does respiration take
place?
Ans: The process of respiration
take place inside the body cells of
living organisms.
******
Q3. Burning and respiration both
use oxygen and both produce
energy. Make a table to show the
similarities and differences
between burning and respiration.
Ans:
Similarities Between Respiration
And Burning:
1- Both requires oxygen.
2- Both produce heat energy.
3- Both produce carbon dioxide as
a byproduct.
Differences Between Respiration
And
Burning:
1- Respiration is a cellular process
WHILE
Burning is a non-cellular process.
2- Respiration occurs in a series of
steps
WHILE
Burning occurs in a single step.
3- During respiration, energy is
released in the form of ATP and
some heat
WHILE
During burning, energy is released
in the form of heat and light.
*****
Q4. Why do you breathe faster
and your heart rate increases
when you run?
Ans: During running, our muscles
need more energy therefore our
breathing process and heart beat
increases to supply
more oxygen to the cells for
energy production by the process
of respiration.
*******
Q5. Make a list of all the parts of
the body that air flows through on
its way to the lungs.
Ans: The parts of the body through
which air flows toward the lungs
are
1- Mouth/Nose 2. Larynx (Voice
box) 3. Trachea (windpipe) 4.
Bronchi 5. Bronchioles 6. Alveoli
(air sac).
*****
Q6. Explain the part played by the
diaphragm and intercostal
muscles in breathing.
Ans: Diaphragm and intercostal
muscles play a vital role in
breathing process.
1. During inhalation both muscles
increases the volume of lungs to
store more air (oxygen).
2. During exhalation both muscles
decreases the volume of lungs
and air (CO²) is forced out of the
lungs.
*******
Q7. Why is it better to breathe
through your nose than through
your mouth?
Ans. It is better to breathe through
the nose than through the mouth.
Reason:
Nose have
1- hairs which filter the air.
2- mucus which trap germs in the
air.
*******
Q10. What is the difference
between a cough, a cold and flu?
What causes these three
conditions and how can they be
prevented?
Ans:
Difference Between Cough, Cold
And Flu:
* Cough is a sudden clearing of
the air passages.
* Cold is a viral infection of nose
and throat.
* Flu is a viral infection of nose,
throat and lungs.
Causes of Cough, Cold And Flu:
The cough, cold and flu are
caused by viruses.
Prevention:
Eating a healthy and balanced
diet, getting plenty of sleep,
breathing in fresh air and some
medicines will all help.
*****
Q11. In your own words, explain
why
smoking can damage your health.
Ans: Smoking can damage our
health in a very bad way.
Reason:
Tobacco smoke contain more than
300 harmful chemicals.
* Nicotine in tobacco smoke
increases heart beat, narrow the
arteries which leads to a high
blood pressure.
* Tar in tobacco smoke can cause
lung cancer.
