Design Thinking Process Overview

Design thinking is an approach to solving problems by understanding user needs through empathy and developing insights to address those needs. The key modes in design thinking are Empathize to understand users, Define to clarify needs and insights, Prototype solutions, and Test prototypes with users to provide feedback and further understanding. The goal is to iteratively design meaningful innovations through a human-centered process.

An approach to solving design problems by

understanding user’s needs and developing
insights to solve those needs
Mode in Design Thinking
“To create meaningful innovations,
you need to know your users and care about their lives.”
What Emphatize
The Empathize mode is the work you do to understand people,
within the context of your design challenge. It is your effort to
understand the way they do things and why, their physical and
emotional needs, how they think about world, and what is
meaningful to them.
WHY empathize ?
Gives you clues about what the people think and feel
It helps you learn about what people need capture physical
manifestations of their experiences – what they do and say
HOW to empathize ?
• Observe : Pengamatan
• Engage : Interaksi Lanjutan
• Immersive : Merasakan langsung pengalamannya
Interview users to gain empathy and insight
into the design challenge from their point of view
“Framing the right problem is the only
way to create the right solution (Point Of View).”
WHAT Define
The Define mode of the design process is all about
bringing clarity and focus to the design space. It’s
about making sense of the widespread information
you have gathered
WHY Define ?
Your Point Of View (POV) defines the Right
challenge to address, based on your new
understanding of people and the problem space
HOW to Define ?
User (Who) : Describe the specific user

Need (What) : What is user need?

Insight (why) : Describe specifically why user need the things.

“It’s not about coming up with the ‘right’ idea,
it’s about generating the broadest range of possibilities.”
Tips to define HMW : Choose the right
problem statement
Problem USER POV
A teenager needs to eat + A 9th grade girl at a new
nutritious food because school
vitamins are vital to good NEED
needs to feel socially
health + accepted when eating
INSIGHT healthy food
because in her risk more
damaging than a health risk
How make we eating
healthy the coolest
thing to do?
Go for Quantity
Don’t worry about quality: sometimes “bad” or
crazy ideas are the path to the really good ones
“Build to think and test to learn.”
WHY PROTOTYPE ?
• To ideate and problem-solve
• To communicate.
• To start a conversation.
• To fail quickly and cheaply.
• To test possibilities.
• To manage the solution-building process
HOW PROTOTYPE ?
• Start building.
• Don’t spend too long on one prototype.
• ID a variable.
• Build with the user in mind.
“Testing is an opportunity to learn
about your solution and your user.”
WHAT TEST
The Test mode is when you solicit feedback, about the prototypes
you have created, from your users and have another opportunity
to gain empathy for the people you are designing for
WHY TEST ?
• To refine prototypes and solutions
• To learn more about your user
• To refine your POV
HOW TEST ?
• Show don’t tell
• Create Experiences
• Ask users to compare
