Color Grading Prep Guide for Editors

1. Flatten the video sequence so all clips are on one video track and link the clips to the original raw footage. 2. Remove any color corrections, effects or transitions to ensure the footage is in a flat color space such as LOG. 3. Export a ProRes 4444 master file and an EDL from the sequence with the highest quality settings. 4. Upload the master file and EDL to a cloud service like Google Drive for the colorist to access remotely.

Prep Guide

How to prepare your locked edit for Color Grading

2023
Prep
Now that you’ve finished your edit, you’ll need to prepare your timeline
for the transition to color. But before you start getting the timeline
ready, make a duplicate of your sequence so you’ll have a backup.

1. Reduce sequence to one single layer

Start by flattening your duplicated video sequence so that all your video
clips are on V1.

2. Link media to Online (Raw) footage

Select all of the cuts and make them offline. Then Link Media to the
original (NOT PROXY) footage.
3. Make sure the footage is in LOG
Remove all temp color and Master Effects/LUTS, ensuring footage is in
a flat color space. For RED .R3D files please use REDWideGamutRGB /
Log3g10 debayer settings. You can tell that the footage is in LOG
when the shadows are substaintially lifted and sits below 15.

4. Remove anything extra

Remove any transitions such as dissolves, fades, etc., remove any
effects, titles/graphics and overlays. Just the footage please.

Important: If some of your cuts has transitions such as cross dissolve,

add those cuts to the end of the timeline and extend each cut with
handles (additional frames to accomodate the duration of transition).

5. Export Quicktime
Export Quicktime file as ProRes 4444. Make sure that you have enabled
“Render at Maximum Bit Depth”, “16-bpc”, “Use Maximum Render
Quality”.

5. Export EDL
File > Export > EDL
Don’t be confused
by Rec709 color space.
It’s normal. We tag it
Rec709, but the footage
itself is in LOG.

Rule of thumb: EDL has

nothing selected.
6. Upload Quicktime file and EDL file to the cloud
Now that you have exported everything it is time to upload it to the
cloud. I recommend using paid Google Drive and a free software that
uploads/downloads to it “Cyberduck”. [Link]

Cyberduck allows for upload/download even when connection is

unstable or interrrupted.

Note: The Prores-4444 is very big file and most likely takes an
overnight upload/download time. So please, plan in advance.

7. Provide the link

Please provide cloud link by 6pm the evening prior to the session date
to ensure start time is met.
