Bioethics
Bioethics- branch of ethics which deals with the problem of life, health and death.
Health- bodily fitness, consisting in the absence of pain or illness. It includes bodily, psychic,
spiritual and religious dimensions of life
Crimes against life
1. Suicide-intentional killing of oneself by one’s own volition and hands.
2. Euthanasia or mercy killing, is the deliberate extinction of human life to prevent further pain
and suffering.
3. Mutilation-the cutting off of a limb or removal of an organ integral to human body for
commercial purposes. Permissible for medical process such as amputation of gangrenous leg.
4. Contraception-Methods to prevent pregnancy. Artificial contraceptives are those methods
and devices invented by men such as drugs, IUD, or condom. Christian morality condemns
contraceptives as contrary to Natural Law
5. Sterilization-a surgical operation which renders a man or a woman incapable of transmitting
life. Vasectomy for male and tubal ligation for female.
a. Therapeutic intended to preserve the well being of the whole body and is therefore
permissible.
b. Eugenic-intended to prevent procreation in otherwise healthy person.
c. Punitive- intended as a punishment for certain criminals (rapist).
6. Drug Addiction-the state of psychic or physical dependence, or both, on a dangerous drug,
arising in a person following the use of drug on a periodic or continuous basis.
7. Alcoholism-the state of dependence on the stimulation of wine and liquor.
8. Abortion-intentional expulsion of a fetus which cannot survive outside the womb of the
mother.
a. Indirect Abortion or Therapeutic abortion-performed for the purpose of saving the life
of the mother. The choice here is between life which can be saved and life which cannot be
saved. Morally permissible. Ex. Unencephalic fetus.
b. Direct or Selective abortion-expulsion of the fetus by the willful wishes of a woman or
parents. Immoral Act.
Pro-life-advocacy that adheres to the principle of protecting and preserving human life in all
forms.
Pro-Choice-states that the mother has the right and the freedom to decide when to continue or
discontinue pregnancy.
8. Same Sex Marriage- marriage of two people of the same sex or gender. Contrary to natural
law under Christian Morality.
9. Prostitution- the practice of engaging in relatively indiscriminate sexual activity, in general
with someone who is not a spouse or a friend, in exchange for immediate payment in money or
other valuables (Flesh Trade).
10. Sale of Bodily Organ, e.g. kidney-Violates the duty towards self and maintain bodily
integrity.
11. Organ Donation- Living organ donation should be recognized as an ethical compromise to the
principle of nonmaleficence (doing no harm), given the risks healthy donors are allowed to assume.
Living organ donation should be reserved for situations in which there is no acceptable alternative.
12. Sex Change-is a process by which a living being changes sex – that is, by which female
sexual characteristics are substituted for male ones or vice versa. Contrary to Natural Law
13. Cosmetic Surgery- a person chooses to have an operation, or invasive medical procedure, to
change their physical appearance for cosmetic rather than medical reasons.
