Secondary Research

What are trolley Bags?

A trolley bag is a type of luggage that features wheels and a retractable handle, allowing it
to be easily rolled along the ground rather than carried by hand. These bags are typically

3
designed to be lightweight and durable, making them a popular choice for travelers who
are looking for an easy and convenient way to transport their belongings. Trolley bags
come in a variety of sizes and styles, from small carry-on bags that can fit in an overhead
bin to large, checked bags that can hold everything you need for an extended trip.

History of Trolley Bags

Trolley bags have a long and exciting history, and Bernard Sadow is credited with
inventing the first rolling suitcase with wheels and a handle. In the early 1970s, Sadow
traveled with his wife and struggled to carry their heavy luggage through the airport. As
he watched a worker move a heavy machine on wheels, he had a lightbulb moment and
realized that baggage could be made with wheels and a handle, making it much easier to
transport.

Sadow began designing the first rolling

suitcase, which he patented in 1972. The
prototype was made of a wooden frame
with two wheels, a handle, and a strap to
secure the luggage. He pitched his idea to
several major luggage companies, but
they hesitated to invest in the new
product.

However, Sadow persisted and eventually convinced the president of a significant

luggage company to take a chance on his invention. The first rolling suitcase was
introduced to the market in 1974, and it quickly became a hit with travelers. As it was
called, the trolley bag revolutionized how people traveled, making it much easier to
transport heavy luggage through airports, train stations, and other travel hubs. Today,
trolley bags are ordinary at airports and are available in various styles, sizes, and colors
to suit every traveler's needs. Thanks to Bernard Sadow's invention, we can now travel
quickly and comfortably, no matter how much luggage we carry.

7
Problems (India-centric)

1. Infrastructure Challenges: India's infrastructure, including roads, train stations,

and airports, can be less accommodating to trolley bags due to uneven surfaces,
crowded spaces, and a lack of escalators or elevators. This can make it challenging
to maneuver trolley bags, especially in busy urban areas.

2. Weight Restrictions: Airlines in India often have strict weight restrictions for
checked and carry-on baggage. Trolley bags, when fully packed, can easily exceed
these limits, leading to additional charges, particularly on domestic flights.

3. Security Concerns: Trolley bags may lack advanced security features, making
them vulnerable to theft or tampering, especially in crowded places like railway
stations or bus terminals.

4. Storage Space at Home: In many Indian households, storage space is limited.

Storing bulky trolley bags when they are not in use can be a significant challenge,
particularly in smaller apartments.

5. Local Transportation: In cities with limited public transportation options,

travelers often rely on rickshaws, taxis, or auto-rickshaws. Trolley bags can be less
convenient in such situations, as they may not fit easily or securely.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

As travel becomes increasingly accessible and integral to the lives of Indian consumers, it
has given rise to a significant challenge for travelers and commuters, specifically related
to the design and functionality of trolley bags. The existing trolley bag offerings fail to
keep pace with evolving needs and expectations. These bags often prove impractical
when navigating the diverse and often uneven terrains frequently encountered in India.
Users grapple with the inconvenience of hauling trolley bags up stairs and across uneven
surfaces, frequently leading to wear and tear. Furthermore, suboptimal ergonomic
features such as uncomfortable handles and grips add to the discomfort. Additionally, the
lack of efficient organizational solutions within these bags creates chaos during travel.
Limited customization options and aesthetics leave users yearning for more personalized

8
and stylish choices.

To address these pressing issues, designing improved trolley bags specifically tailored for
the Indian market is imperative, offering enhanced functionality, ergonomic comfort,
efficient organization, and the freedom for personal expression through design
customization.

Understanding these segments allows brands to align their product offerings with the varying needs and financial capabilities across different demographics .

The demand for advanced features like GPS and in-built charging in trolley bags signifies a shift towards more tech-savvy and convenience-centric travel products in India. This trend can drive innovation within the luggage market, pushing manufacturers to integrate technology and smart design into their products. Consequently, it alters competitive dynamics by differentiating brands based on the sophistication of their features, thus potentially expanding market share towards brands that can deliver on these tech-enhanced offers .
