Flanged Beam Design Example

1) The document summarizes the design of a reinforced concrete beam with an effective flange width of 895mm that is subjected to bending moments. 2) The design is checked for both the mid-span and support moments and includes calculating the normalized bending resistance, lever arm, required reinforcement area, and ensuring the reinforcement satisfies minimum and maximum limits. 3) For both load cases, 2 diameter 16mm reinforcing bars are determined to be sufficient and satisfy all design checks.

Design example of a Flanged reinforced concrete beam

1. A continuous beam in a residential building is loaded as shown below. The beam is an L-
beam with an effective flange width of 895mm. The depth and width are 450*230mm.
concrete cover = 35mm, C25/30, fyk=460Mpa

Step 1- Material strength

0.85∗25
C-20/25 𝑓𝑐𝑑 = = 4.17𝑀𝑃𝑎
1.5
460
S-500 𝑓𝑦𝑑 = 1.15 = 400𝑀𝑃𝑎

Step 2-Determine the effective depth (d)

𝜙𝐿
𝑑 = ℎ − 𝐶𝐶 − − 𝜙𝑠 = 450 – 35 – 16/2 – 8 = 399 𝑚𝑚

Step 3- Normalized bending resistance (𝑲)

I. For a span moment
𝑀𝑒𝑑 = 36.66𝑘𝑁𝑚
Effective flange width=𝐵𝑒𝑓𝑓 = 895𝑚𝑚… Since flange is in compression, we use the effective
flange width
𝑀𝑒𝑑 36.66 ∗ 106
𝐾= = = 0.01029
𝑏𝑒𝑓𝑓 𝑑2 𝑓𝑐𝑘 895 ∗ 3992 ∗ 25
Step 4- Check the Compression reinforcement requirement
Check if 𝐾 < 𝐾’ = 0.167…. No Compression reinforcement is required!!!
Step 5- Determine the lever arm (Z)
𝑍 = 𝑑 [ 0.5 + √ (0.25 – 𝐾/1.134)] = 𝑑 [ 0.5 + √(0.25 – 0.01029/1.134)] = 0.99𝑑
𝑍 = 0.99𝑑 < 0.95𝑑, 𝑵𝑶𝑻 𝑶𝒌!
Use 𝑍 = 0.95𝑑 = 0.95 ∗ 399 = 379.05𝑚𝑚
Step 6- Determine the area of tensile reinforcement As
𝑀𝑒𝑑 36.66 ∗ 106
𝐴𝑆1 = = = 241.667𝑚𝑚2
𝑓𝑦𝑑 𝑍 400 ∗ 379.05
Use ∅16mm reinforcement bar
𝐴𝑆 241.667
𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑎𝑟 = = = 1.2 ≈ 2
𝑎𝑆 𝜋 ∗ 82
𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝟐∅𝟏𝟔𝒎𝒎
𝐴𝑆,𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑 = 2 ∗ 𝜋 ∗ 82 = 402𝑚𝑚2
Step 7- check minimum and maximum reinforcement
2⁄ 2⁄
𝑓𝑐𝑡𝑚 = 0.3𝑓𝑐𝑘 3 = 0.3 ∗ 25 3 = 2.565 (𝑇𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 3.1 𝐸𝑆 − 𝐸𝑁 1995: 2015)
𝑓 0.26∗2.565∗230∗399
𝐴𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 0.26 𝑓𝑐𝑡𝑚 𝑏𝑡 𝑑 = 133.04𝑚𝑚2
As provided ≥ 𝑦𝑘 ={ 460 𝑶𝒌!
0.0013𝑏𝑡 𝑑 0.0013 ∗ 230 ∗ 399 = 119.301𝑚𝑚2
o Therefore, provided reinforcement area is greater than the minimum required area.
𝐴𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 0.04𝑏𝑑 = 0.04 ∗ 230 ∗ 399 = 3670.8𝑚𝑚^2 > 𝐴𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑 Ok!

II. For support moment

𝑀𝑒𝑑 = 36.296𝑘𝑁𝑚
Effective flange width=𝐵𝑤 = 230𝑚𝑚… Since flange is in tension, we use the beam width
𝑀𝑒𝑑 36.296 ∗ 106
𝐾= = = 0.0396
𝑏𝑤 𝑑2 𝑓𝑐𝑘 230 ∗ 3992 ∗ 25
Check if 𝐾 < 𝐾’ = 0.167…. No Compression reinforcement required!!!
𝑍 = 𝑑 [ 0.5 + √ (0.25 – 𝐾/1.134)] = 𝑑 [ 0.5 + √(0.25 – 0.0396/1.134)] = 0.99𝑑
𝑍 = 0.99𝑑 < 0.95𝑑, 𝑵𝑶𝑻 𝑶𝒌!
Use 𝑍 = 0.95𝑑 = 0.95 ∗ 399 = 379.05𝑚𝑚
𝑀𝑒𝑑 36.296 ∗ 106
𝐴𝑆1 = = = 240𝑚𝑚2
𝑓𝑦𝑑 𝑍 400 ∗ 379.05

𝑎𝑆 𝜋 ∗ 82

𝑓𝑐𝑡𝑚 = 0.3𝑓𝑐𝑘 3 = 0.3 ∗ 25 3 = 2.565 (𝑇𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 3.1 𝐸𝑆 − 𝐸𝑁 1995: 2015)
𝑓 0.26∗2.565∗230∗399
𝐴𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 0.26 𝑓𝑐𝑡𝑚 𝑏𝑡 𝑑 = 133.04𝑚𝑚2
As provided ≥ 𝑦𝑘 ={ 460 𝑶𝒌!
0.0013𝑏𝑡 𝑑 0.0013 ∗ 230 ∗ 399 = 119.301𝑚𝑚2
