Introduction
Hello friends! I’m over the moon excited to share this tapestry
pattern with you all. This time Ponyo!!
Ponyo is hands down one of my favorite comfort films so I felt the
urge to give it my all in the making of this tapestry. There are a total
of 11 colors & because of that I’m labeling this as an advanced pattern.
That being said I hope y’all are down for the challenge & enjoy this
pattern

Materials Needed
o Crochet hook (I used a 3.75mm hook) Abbreviations:
o Dowel rod, I used a 32 inch rod from Joann fabrics o Ch = chain
o St = stitch
o Scissors o Sts = stitches
o Sc = single crochet
o Yarn needle o Sl st= slip stitch
o Yarn, 11 colors
Yarn colors
So this was the trickiest tapestry for me when it came to finding the right colors and
shades. I ended up using a variety of different yarns.
Lily’s sugar’n cream (Joann fabrics) 4 OZ /113g , 190 yrds
• Marine blue
• Dazzle blue
• Black
• White
• Red
Peaches & creme (Walmart) 2.5 OZ / 70.9g , 129 yrds
• Bright orange
Rainbow cotton 8/8 (hobbii yarn) 1.8 OZ / 50g , 82 yrds
• Color 70 blue sky
• Color 71 light sky blue (2 skeins)
• Color 89 almond
Coboo lion brand (Joann fabrics) 3.5 OZ / 100G ,232 yrds
• Ice blue ( I doubled the ply when using this to match the thickness)
Caron one pound (Joann fabrics) 16OZ / 453 g , 812 yrds
• Rose ( I only used this because I had it left over, there are probably better
options for this color in a cotton yarn such as Lily’s sugar’n cream)

Graph Tips
• Start by following the grid right to left , (ch 1 & turn) then work left to right on
the graph for the even rows (2,4,6..)
• Each box is 1 sc
• You can carry your yarn every few stitches, or if you’re like me -only carry the
yarn to the sts that the color is needed; this will give your piece a messy back
but a very clean front
• You can count your stitches regularly if needed -each row should have 84 sts
• It’s very important to know [RS] “right side” & [WS] “wrong side” when
working the pattern. There is a natural shift when working side to side & you
will notice breaks in the pattern or parts that appear warped if you mix these
up

Graph Tips

means you will start out working on the back.

Following color charts
General tips:
-you will always read the chart left to right
-The number inside each box is the number of sts in that color
For example: a blue colored box with the number “5” means five sc in the
color blue
-it’s important to know the difference between [RS] “right side” & [WS] means
“wrong side” .
When working the right side, you will have no loose ends facing you & the image
should be clean.
When working the wrong side, the image will appear backwards and this side will
have all your loose ends
-it’s important to note the the left handed color chart & right handed color
chart are opposite. If you are right handed you’ll start row 1 on the right side
[RS]. The left handed color chart starts on the wrong side [WS].

Adding surface crochet
After finishing the graph I realized I wasn’t
pleased with how the top of the jellyfish looked so I
added surface crochet to make a more clean look
Underlined on the graph is where I added the
surface crochet

Making the border
Once you’ve finished your last row, switch to your border color, ch 1 & turn
Then sc through the first st, ch 1, skip the next st, sc & ch 1.
Repeat this pattern across skipping every other st & ch 1 after every st
At the corner, sc in the latest st, ch 2 & sc back into that same corner st.
Then, start following the stitch pattern from the first text to the side evenly (repeat this at each corner)
At the last corner you can sl st into that corner st & fasten off OR make your border thicker by adding another
row. You can do this by using the same moss st placing your sc sts under the chain sts from the previous row.

Attaching dowel rod
Once done with the border, ch 1
Yarn over your dowel rod & make a sc in the corner st.
Then ch 1 & work a sc in the next st
Continue this pattern along the dowel rod
Note this is the same pattern used for the border, the only difference is yarning over the dowel rod before you
sc.
After your last sc in the corner st, start making a chain
-once long enough, attach the chain to the other side of the dowel rod & fasten off

At this point your tapestry should be on the
dowel rod & ready to hang!
