QUESTION 5: BUSINESS PLAN

Read the following scenario and answer the questions that follow.

The Blanket Lady – An inspiring story

Elvina Presley is a hawker in downtown Johannesburg

who sells blankets. She is very proud that her
customers can sleep warm every night. From a young
age she wanted to become an entrepreneur and her
dreams finally paid off. “The money I make in the week
is enough to buy everything I need. Things weren’t
always this easy. In the beginning I had no customers,” she added.

Eventually her desire, perseverance and hard work paid off. Although sales are
still good, more and more hawkers started selling blankets in the same area as
she does and the recent pandemic didn’t help either. However, she indicated that
her blankets are of a much higher quality.

“It is time to grow my business. People from Alberton, Springs and Krugersdorp
come to buy blankets from me,” she indicated with a huge smile. But she also
acknowledges that she needs financial help. “I know about bills that I have to pay,
but advertising, paying rent for my storeroom and paying my employees can be a
bit of a challenge.”

When expanding her business, Elvina Presley should include components such as the executive summary, business description, market analysis, organization and management structure, marketing and sales strategy, product line or services offered, financial projections, and funding request. These components provide a comprehensive roadmap and strategy for achieving business goals and securing necessary funding .

Critical qualities include perseverance, determination, and adaptability. Elvina demonstrated perseverance and determination when she faced an initial lack of customers. Her persistent efforts and continual striving to improve her business secured success despite the challenges faced .

A SWOT analysis helps a business like Elvina's identify its internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats. This analysis provides strategic insights into exploiting opportunities, such as expanding into supported markets, while addressing weaknesses and mitigating threats like increasing competition from other hawkers .

The Debtors' Ledger records detailed information about credit sales and payments received from customers. For Oakland Furniture, it helps in tracking outstanding customer balances, managing collections, and analyzing creditworthiness. By providing a clear account of each debtor’s transactions, the ledger aids in ensuring timely follow-ups and maintaining healthy liquidity .

Supply illustrates how producers are willing to offer different quantities of a good at varying price levels. During the pandemic, as demand for soap increased due to health regulations, suppliers responded by increasing the quantity supplied to meet the heightened demand, moving towards a new equilibrium in the market. This highlights the responsive nature of supply to changes in market demand .

A financial plan is crucial because it outlines the expected financial performance and requirements for a business. In the case of The Blanket Lady, the financial plan helps in managing operational costs like advertising, employee salaries, and rent. It also assists in securing funding needed for growth and expansion into new markets. Financial projections and cost management strategies are critical in ensuring that the business remains profitable and sustains its operations, especially in competitive environments .

A Cash Receipts Journal records all cash inflows from different sources, such as sales revenue and debtor payments. For Seven Eleven Supermarket, it helps in tracking daily cash transactions, ensuring accurate and timely recording of cash flows, and monitoring overall cash management. By maintaining an updated Cash Receipts Journal, the supermarket can prevent discrepancies, improve financial reporting, and facilitate effective financial planning .

A Creditors’ Journal helps in maintaining accurate records of amounts owed to suppliers, managing vendor payments, and organizing expenses systematically. For Seven Eleven Supermarket, it facilitates effective cash flow management, avoids payment errors, and improves vendor relationships, which are vital for continuous supply and favorable credit terms .

The Law of Demand states that quantity demanded generally varies inversely with price, ceteris paribus. During a pandemic, such as COVID-19, government regulations can shift the demand curve, leading to increased demand even if prices rise slightly. In the local soap market example, demand for soap would increase as masks and regular handwashing became mandatory, shifting the demand curve to the right. This increased demand, at every price level, would result in higher equilibrium quantity and potentially higher prices, demonstrating the application of demand theory in real-life crises .

A detailed marketing plan is essential for identifying target markets, creating brand recognition, and strategically positioning Elvina’s offerings in the competitive landscape. It enables efficient resource allocation, guides advertising efforts, and facilitates tracking of marketing campaign performance, consequently driving business growth and expanding customer reach .
