Lubrication System Overview and Diagram
The Microspin cleanable oil filtering system functions by utilizing cleanable filter elements and a centrifuge. The centrifuge, driven by the engine's oil pressure, spins and compacts contaminants against its housing, removing particles as small as 0.5 microns. The cleanable filter elements further remove particles as small as 25 microns absolute. This system is environmentally beneficial because it eliminates the need for disposable filter elements, reducing waste and avoiding hazardous waste disposal costs .
Oil coolers help maintain engine temperature by transferring heat from the oil to a circulating coolant. The oil cooler is a tube and baffle type assembly in which auxiliary water pumps circulate coolant through the tube bundle. As oil circulates around the tubes, heat is transferred from the oil through the tubes to the coolant. The coolant then carries the heat to a heat transfer device for dissipation, which helps maintain optimal engine temperature .
The oil strainer system prevents damage to engine components by filtering out contaminants from the oil before it reaches critical engine parts. It contains a bypass pressure relief valve that activates when there is a pressure differential of 15 psi (103 kPa). This condition causes the valve to open, allowing oil to bypass the strainer element and continue flowing to the main oil header, ensuring consistent lubrication even if the strainer is clogged .
The oil level regulator ensures the correct oil level by using a float mechanism that opens a float valve to allow makeup oil into the crankcase if the oil level drops. If the regulator malfunctions due to lack of maintenance, such as not cleaning the inlet screen, it could result in incorrect oil levels. This may lead to either insufficient oil leading to increased engine wear or too much oil causing issues like oil foaming and reduced efficiency .
The purpose of a pressure regulating valve in the lubrication system is to maintain proper oil pressure within the system. It achieves this by adjusting the flow of oil based on the current oil pressure. If the pressure becomes too high, the valve opens to allow some oil to bypass the main system, thus preventing potential over-pressurization and ensuring consistent system performance. This regulation is crucial for the optimal operation of engine components .
An inline lubricator in the prelube system improves system performance by injecting oil into a stream of compressed air or gas. This ensures proper internal lubrication for the vanes of the air/gas operated prelube pump motor. The continuous lubrication reduces friction within the pump motor, increases efficiency, and extends the lifespan of the pump by preventing wear and tear that could result from inadequate lubrication .
Improper venting of the prelube pump motor exhaust in high-pressure systems poses significant risks. Without proper venting, there is the danger of exhaust gases accumulating in confined spaces, potentially leading to explosive or flammable situations. This could result in severe personal injury or even death. It is essential to adhere to all applicable codes to ensure safe installation and operation practices .
The internal oil control system ensures lubrication by directing pressurized oil through internal passages in the crankcase to the main bearings via drillings in the main bearing saddles. Oil flows from the main bearing journals into the T-drilled crankshaft and then through drilled passages in the connecting rods. This process lubricates the connecting rod bearing, piston pin bushing, and piston pin. For the camshaft bearings, the system directs oil flow to the camshaft bearing saddles, where the oil flows through holes in the cam bearing caps and the valve lifter housing, lubricating the roller followers and cam lobes before returning to the oil pan .
Oil flow through the crankcase is integral to engine lubrication. Pressurized oil from the main oil header flows through internal passages in the crankcase to the main bearings and camshaft bearings. It travels through holes in the cam bearing caps to lubricate the roller followers and cam lobes before dropping back to the oil pan. This flow ensures that all moving parts receive adequate lubrication to minimize friction and wear, maintaining engine longevity and performance .
The pre-lube system is crucial in preventing engine wear during start-up by ensuring that all moving parts, especially the turbochargers, are properly lubricated before the engine begins operation. This system purges air from the lubrication system and lubricates key components to avoid 'dry' starts that can lead to bearing damage. It is activated by opening the pre-lube valve, which admits air from a main air/gas supply line and turns the prelube pump air motor. The prelube pump/motor then circulates oil throughout the system before the engine starts .
