Understand
Bit , Byte & Word
In digital electronics, the
fundamental units of data storage
and representation are bits , bytes
& Word.
These binary building blocks are the
foundation of all digital
information:
Bit (Binary Digit)
The smallest unit of data, a bit can
represent two distinct states: 0 or 1
Bits are the basic language of
computers, used to convey on/off,
true/false, or any two distinct
conditions.
Byte:
A group of 8 bits, forming a more
meaningful unit of data. Bytes are
commonly used to represent
characters in text, such as letters
and numbers.
Word (16-bit):
Unsigned: In unsigned format,
a 16-bit word can represent values
from 0 to 65,535. This is useful for
applications where only non-negative
values are needed.
Signed: In signed format, the most
significant bit (MSB) represents the
sign, allowing a 16-bit word to
represent values from -32,768 to
32,767 using two's complement.
This is used in various applications,
including temperature measurements
and sensor readings.
