Hydraulic Lift Weight Calculation

The document describes a fluid power automobile lift system that can lift a maximum weight of 26564 N. It asks what percent error occurs from ignoring the 1-m oil head between the air-oil interface and piston bottom. It also provides information about a hand pump system, including piston diameters and stroke, average hand force, and asks to calculate the load lifted, distance moved in 15 seconds, and output horsepower assuming 90% efficiency.

For the fluid power automobile lift system of Figure ,

The air pressure equals 550 kPa gage. If the hydraulic piston has a
250-mm diameter, what is the maximum weight of an automobile
that can be lifted?
The specific gravity of the oil is 0.90.
What percent error in the answer to this problem occurs by
ignoring the 1-m head of oil between the air-oil interface surface
and the bottom surface of the piston?

Ppiston = Pair - γoil h

= 550*103 - (0.9*9810 )*1 = 541171 Pa
Lifted weight = P . A
= 541171 * = 26564 N
An operator makes 20 complete cycles during a 15-sec
interval using the hand pump of Figure .
Each complete cycle consists of two pump strokes
(intake and power).
The pump has a 5.08-cm-diameter piston and the load
cylinder has a 10.16-cm-diameter piston.
The average hand force is 88.9 N during each power
stroke.
a. How much load can be lifted?
b. Through what distance will the load be moved during
the 15-sec interval
assuming no oil leakage? The pump piston has a 7.62
cm stroke.
c. What is the output HP assuming 90% efficiency?
First find the force acting on the rod of
the pump.

Next calculate the pump discharge pressure p.

calculate the load carrying capacity.

b. Total volume of oil ejected from the

pump equals the volume of oil displacing
the load cylinder.
