NWC Convention 2008

June 4, 2008 marked another milestone for the semiconductor
and electronics industry professional volunteers as the SEIPI
Networking Committees (NWC) Conventions made its debut at
the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia, as one of the major
proponents of the Philippine Semiconductor and Electronics
Convention and Exhibition (PSECE) 2008 that was also held last

Led by the NWC Officers of each committee, eight (8) conventions were launched; these conventions were
all aimed at enhancing and elevating the knowledge, skills and capabilities of the industry’s workforce. No less than
2,500 industry executives, managers, supervisors and engineers were present to support and attend the following
conventions:

This whole day convention has been the tradition of the NWC Officers and its members yearly since 2004
and is considered as the annual gathering of the entire NWC volunteers. It is during this time of the year that the
NWC Officers and volunteers get to actively involve themselves in an industry event. Due to the success of the
PSECE 2008, SEIPI has committed its full support to vigorously campaign for the NWC Convention as it targets to
increase magnanimously the attendees of the SEIPI Networking Committee Conventions and to, hopefully, surpass
yet another milestone.

*The networking committees act as the platforms for benchmarking and exchanging
ideas among top and midlevel managers of the various member companies. The NWC
Officers and its members regularly meet monthly for a learning session. SEIPI member

The second day started with a sponsored luncheon by

ment company, at the Baguio Country Club Veranda. This
was followed by a group photo session. However, as the
General Membership Meeting commenced, close to 200 peo-
ple from 99 respective companies within the semiconductor
and electronics industry were in attendance.

The “reggae themed” fellowship dinner included the awarding of winners from the
SEIPI Sports Fellowship, raffle prizes, and giveaways. The evening also featured the
local Baguio artists with the president of “Konsehong Sining ng Baguio” (Baguio Arts
Guild) Ben-Hur Villanueva, also owner of Arko ni Apo museum gallery located in
Tam-awan village, which showcased fabulous paintings and bronze sculptures. An
evening of camaraderie and fun with a few in-house talent performances from Cesar
Quiason and the board as well as the acoustic prowess of Amelco Desiccants
rounded off the evening.

The last day of the 92nd SEIPI General Membership Meeting was a morning line/plant

18th ASEMEP National Technical Symposium

Debuts at SMX Convention Center
The Association of Semiconductor/Electronics Manufacturing Engineers of the
Philippines (ASEMEP) National Technical Symposium or ANTS on its 18th year
truly had its debut of sorts. This year’s ANTS was hosted by Fujitsu Computer
Products of the Philippines at the recently opened SMX Convention Center at the
Mall of Asia.

The theme was “Creating Infinite Possibilities through Global Technical Excellence”

Coinciding with the Philippine Semiconductor and Electronics Convention and

Exhibition (PSECE), the 2-day event began on June 5, 2008 and kicked off with its
traditional Parade of Colors in recognition of all the companies who have shared

The group of plenary speakers that followed in the program were lead by SEIPI’s very
own Chairman of the Board, Mr. Arthur Young, who gave a brief industry outlook. Then, Under-
secretary Virgilio “Boy” Dela Pena, who represented The Committee on Science and Technology,
updated all the attendees about government efforts on the industry. After the update, Fujitsu Vice
President of HDD Division, Mr. Masaaki Suzuki, provided a very interesting presentation on the

After the commencement, the rest of the day continued with various technical paper
presentations from various categories which lasted until the 2nd and last day with a total of 83
technical papers and 5 product presentation/learning sessions. This was an increase from the 62
technical papers accepted the previous year.

DAY 2 INDUSTRY PLANNING SESSION

At 9 o’clock in the morning, all the guests huddled at the Yats Wine Club as they prepared themselves
minutes before the session. Taking the lead as facilitators during the day were Mr. Atong Leano and Ms.
Bubut Leano of Texas Instruments (Phils.). The SEIPI Board were represented by Mr. Arthur Young (Psi
Technologies), Mr. Dan Lachica (First Philec), Mr. Bing Viera (Texas Instruments), Mr.
Richard Cohen (ON Semi), and Mr. Ernie Santiago (SEIPI). Other SEIPI Presidents that
were also present were Mr. Freddie Pacho (PMI/TSS), Mr. Bert Lina (Air21), Mr. Pepe
Santiago (Trident) and Mr. Dennis Ibarra (former SEIPI Board). The Networking
PEZA Director Committees also of SEIPI were well represented through their respective chairmen: Mr.
General Lilia De
Lima and Noel Pabilona and Ms. Orange Galindo (AESSEP), Mr. Louie Macatiag (ASEFEX), Mr. Luke
SEIPI President Mendoza (ASEMEP), Mr. Ces Madrid (ASITEP), Mr. Teej Arboleda (ASPA), Mr. Gani Ong
Ernie Santiago (ASPM), and Mr. Edwin Suarez (SETMA). Director General Lilia de Lima (PEZA) also
graced the planning session with her presence which was also greatly appreciated by
SEIPI.

Everyone was able to efficiently contribute to achieving the planning session objectives
that are: 1) to understand where the industry and the country is today, 2) to determine
the role of SEIPI in promoting the country as a site for investments, and 3) to create a
guide/process to enhance the industry’s business environment by identifying the top key growth
opportunities and developing tangible programs and projects for 2008-2009.

After a thorough discussion of the previous Focus Areas and Programs of SEIPI on the year 2007, the group
was asked to breakout into three (3) teams. The first team was composed of the SEIPI Board and CEOs, the
second team was composed of all NWC Chairpersons, and the third team was composed of the SEIPI OMG.

Key Growth Opportunities

All three (3) groups were tasked to identify the top four (4) opportunities that the industry can take
advantage of and the difficulties that might diminish competitiveness of both the country and the industry.

In the plenary, the top (4) identified Key Growth Opportunities are as follows:

1. Integrated Industry (Government Strategy for Market Growth)

2. Unified Competency Development Strategy
3. Aggressive Industry Marketing Campaign
4. Supply Chain Development

Another important growth opportunity that has been identified is the Cost and Availability of
Infrastructure particularly power, water, transportation, roads and airports.

Priority Programs for 2008-2009

Upon determining the top four (4) Key Growth Opportunities, another breakout session was held having the
same groupings. The objective this time is for each group to come up with tangible programs aligned with the
identified opportunities for both the country and the industry.
In summary the four (4) SEIPI Prioritized Programs for 2008-2009 are as follows:

1. Investment Promotion Program

2. Develop a Semiconductor University Model
3. Supply Chain Development
4. Drive Manufacturing Excellence

At about 4:30 in the afternoon, the group took the opportunity to visit TI’s on-going construction site at
Clark that is expected to be operational in September 2008.

To end a productive day, a fellowship dinner was held at the Yats Wine Cellar as an act of appreciation for
everyone who attended the Planning Session and willingly shared their time and knowledge for the
development of the industry and the organization.
