ACTIVITY 2

1. Give examples of the principles/elements of urban design in your local setting (CEBU CITY)

A. Maintain a compact and diverse critical mass of activity

Fuente Osmeña Circle, situated at the core of

Cebu City, functions as a central meeting point
that hosts a diverse array of activities. This
roundabout is a focal point for cultural events,
street performances, and social get-togethers,
contributing to its lively and dynamic
ambiance.

B. Create civic elements

Plaza Independencia is a historic public

square in Cebu City that features
several civic elements, including
statues, gardens, and benches. It serves
as a peaceful retreat in the midst of the
bustling city and a place where
residents and tourists can connect with
the city's history and culture.

C. Integrate traffic movement and pedestrian safety and streetscape measures

Osmeña Boulevard, a main road in Cebu City, has

been greatly improved to make traffic flow better
and keep people walking on the sidewalk safer. They
widened the sidewalks, added places for people to
cross the road, and made the surroundings look
nicer. This makes it a safer and more pleasant place
for people who walk.

D. Respect the traditional urban development pattern

Cebu City's historic Colon Street is a prime example
of respecting the traditional urban development
pattern. The street retains its narrow layout and
features a mix of colonial-era and contemporary
buildings, preserving the city's historical character.

E. New and renovated buildings should complement adjacent building

Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 is

an example of a newly constructed building that
complements the adjacent Terminal 1, ensuring a
seamless and cohesive travel experience for
passengers. The design reflects Cebu's modernity
while respecting existing infrastructure.

F. Architecture should simulate interest at street level

Mango Avenue Ayala Terraces

G. Reinforcement through color

Archbishop Reyes Avenue SM Seaside Spiral stairs

H. Signs should complement building appearance
National Museum of The Philippines-Cebu Heritage of Cebu Monument

I. Conservation of historic buildings

Fort San Pedro Magellan’s Cross Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu

J. Planning and design of transport and parking lots

SM City Cebu, a major shopping mall, has a well-planned multi-level parking facility that
efficiently accommodates vehicles without causing congestion on surrounding streets. The
design ensures smooth traffic flow and a convenient shopping experience.

2. Give examples of planning tools that can be applied to a study on urban planning and design
in your local area ( Give a problem , setting and planning tools applied in the study)

Problem: Flooding in Colon Street, Cebu City

Setting: Colon Street is one of the oldest and busiest streets in Cebu City, known for its historical
significance and bustling commercial activities. However, it is susceptible to flooding during
heavy rains, causing disruptions to businesses and traffic, as well as posing safety concerns for
pedestrians.

To address the flooding problem in Colon Street, a comprehensive study involving various
planning tools can be conducted:

A. Seasonal Diagrams:

Seasonal diagrams are used to visualize and analyze the patterns of flooding over different
seasons. This tool helps in understanding the frequency and severity of flooding events.
Researchers collect historical data on flooding incidents in Colon Street over several years . This
data is then organized into seasonal diagrams, illustrating when flooding is most likely to occur.
By identifying patterns, planners can better allocate resources for flood mitigation measures
during specific times of the year.

B. Semi-Structured Interviews:

Semi-structured interviews are conducted to gather qualitative information from various

stakeholders, including local residents, business owners, city officials, and experts. These
interviews help in understanding the root causes and impacts of flooding, as well as potential
solutions. Planners conduct semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders in Colon Street.
They ask open-ended questions about their experiences with flooding, their observations, and
their suggestions for mitigation. Insights from these interviews can provide valuable qualitative
data to complement quantitative analyses.

C. Mapping:

Mapping tools, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), are used to create visual
representations of the flood-prone areas, drainage systems, and infrastructure in Colon Street.
Mapping helps identify vulnerable zones and potential interventions. GIS technology is
employed to create flood risk maps for Colon Street. These maps highlight flood-prone areas,
drainage networks, elevation data, and existing infrastructure. By overlaying these layers,
planners can pinpoint areas where flooding is most likely to occur and propose targeted
interventions.
D. Focus Group Meetings:

Focus group meetings gather a diverse group of stakeholders to engage in discussions and
brainstorm solutions collectively. These meetings facilitate collaboration and consensus-building
among participants. Planners organize focus group meetings involving representatives from
local businesses, residents, city authorities, engineers, and urban planners. These meetings
provide a platform for participants to share their concerns, ideas, and priorities related to
flooding. Through collaboration, stakeholders can work together to develop a comprehensive
flood mitigation plan for Colon Street.
