Making sense of a new landscape RM&G in primary care

A joint event between NHS R&D Forum and the National Institute for Health Research The current re-organisation of the NHS raises questions about the delivery of proportionate, pragmatic but robust Research Management & Governance functions for primary care. No clear policy direction on the hosting of RM&G services has been set out, and the arrangements to support and enable primary care research will therefore be strongly influenced by local factors. This workshop will allow delegates to share their experiences of navigating through this uncertainty. Hearing about others plans and challenging each others assumptions should help us to consider our local plans more critically. Some of the questions to be considered: Who should provide RM&G services for GPs and other independent contractors for NHS patients when PCTs close (or close down their existing RM&G service)? Should Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) be expected/ encouraged/ avoided as providers of RM&G services? How does this tie in to potential arrangements for performance management of independent contractors/ providers? What is the role of PCT Clusters? How do we handle new providers? Are there different approaches we should take for social enterprises or commercial providers? Is there a role for CLRNs/ existing consortia in providing RM&G? Should non-NHS providers be CLRN members? Should non-NHS providers be allowed to use CSP? Who should attend? This workshop is for anyone currently involved in providing RM&G in primary care (including new provider arrangements), primary care researchers including independent contractors, CLRN staff, and PCRN staff. Delegates are expected to have a good working knowledge of existing arrangements for RM&G in primary care in order to contribute actively to the debate. About the Event This event will focus on discussing the processes and systems that support issuing of NHS permission and that enable an organisation to take on sponsor responsibilities. Most of the workshop will involve facilitated discussions. Following the event This meeting is part of the RM&G work stream of the NIHR Advisory Group on research and the transition to Clinical Commissioning in the New NHS chaired by Prof Paul Wallace. The outputs of the workshop will link with the wider work of the advisory group and help influence national recommendations. Other activities outside this workshop will be assessing the role of CCGs and other organisations in developing research ideas and capacity, and in encouraging the translation of evidence into clinical practice.
