RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TIME, SPEED,
AND DISTANCE
As we know, distance = speed x time
D=SxT
It means that ifa person is running at a speed of 20 km/h.
and he runs for 2 h, he will be covering a total distance of
40 km, That is, distance = 20 x 2 = 40 km
Conversion from m/s to km/h and Vice
Versa
If speed is given in m/s and itis required to convert it into
km/h, then we multiply it by 18/5, and when speed is
given in km/h and we have to convert it into m/s, then we
rmuiply it by 5/18
36 kam/h = 36 x= = 10 m/s
72km/b
Different cases
By using the basic relationship between time, speed, and
distance, the following three different cases are possible:
Case! When (distance) is constant Vat
$0, Vi /Va=Ta/Ts (Direct)
Case Il When‘ (time) is constant S«V
$0, $1 /S2=Vs V2
Case III When S (speed) is constant T a D
$0, 1) /T2= Ds /Dz
Approaches
Using STD table
Advantages of tabular form
Table helps to organize complex information given in the
question.
Itinerease speed and accuracy while solving TSD
questions
Further, We can apply tabular form in all types of
questions like trains, boats etc.

Example
Time, Speed, and Distance (TSD) When speed of a car is
increased by 25%, time taken reduces by 20 minutes in
covering a certain distance. What is the actual time taken
to cover the same distance by actual speed?
Solution
Normal Method
Since we know $ = V x T (Distance = Speed « Time) New
speed = 1.25 V, so new time = T/1.25 So, reduction in time
=1/1,25 = 0.25 1/125 = 1/5
1/5 =20 min = T = 100 min
Fraction Method
1s 4 10)>20Min
if (S1)25%6->4->Sthen (TH) og ZOD
Product Constancy Method
Since speed has been increased by 25%, so time will
reduce by 20%. Now, 20% T(Time) = 20 min So, Total time
00 min
Example
‘TSD Mayank goes to his office from his home at a speed of
20 kmph and gets late by 10 min, However, when he
increases his speed to 25 kmph, he is 20 min early. What is
the distance from his office to his home?
Normal Method
Let us assume that distance = D
So, D/20 ~ D/25 = 30/60 h = 1/2 So, D= 50 km
Fraction Method
Speed ($1) = 20725 -» 25%
‘Time (TL) = 10 min late + 20 min early = 30 minutes
| 15 4 1(4)>30 Min
1 (St) 25993 gthen (TY)->5 > 5 550 min = 2.5Hour
SoD = 20 «2.5 = SOKM
Product Constancy Method
S=V xT (5)25%1 > (T)20%L > 30 min > T= 150 min
5 hour So, total distance = 20 x 2.5 = 50 kmTYPE
