ODOT Printer Driver Configuration Files

The document discusses different printer driver configuration files that can be used to direct printing to a physical device or create file formats like PDF, TIFF, or JPG. It lists eight configuration files used by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) to produce contract plans and other materials. These files allow adjusting settings like background color, line weights, and paper sizes and are used to print to specific devices or create files for different purposes like uploading to a database or creating high-resolution images.

Printer Driver Configuration Files

Different printer driver configuration files may be attached to direct the print to an actual hard-copy
printing device, rather than PDF, or to create TIFF or JPG format. The four PDF printer driver
configuration files allow you to change print settings of background color, line weight or levels. The
table below shows just the (*.pltcfg) files that ODOT has added for producing ODOT Contract Plans and
other ODOT products. Odotsizes_PDF.pltcfg is the printer driver configuration file that is used by every
ODOT “Design_” or “Sheet_” print style.

The odotsizes_PDF_levels.pltcfg offers a unique feature of allowing adjustment of displayed content levels within a PDF viewer without altering the print. This feature, achieved by setting 'Enable Optional Content' to 'On' and 'Print Optional Content' to 'As Created', provides greater flexibility for users to control which elements are visible at any time, making it particularly useful for complex document levels .

Someone might opt for the jpeg_400dpi_WhiteBkgd_FineLines.pltcfg file over a PDF configuration when they require image output in JPEG format with high resolution (400 DPI) and a white background. This format might be more suitable for presentations, image embedding in report forms, or web use where PDF is not supported or would result in unnecessary file complexity .

Printer configuration files help ensure that all printed materials adhere to predetermined line weights, paper sizes, and other print parameters, maintaining a consistent look and feel across documents. This consistency is critical for organizational branding, reliability in document interpretation, and ensuring compliance with technical standards required by interfaces like the ODOT .

The odotsizes_PDF_1inTo400ft.pltcfg is advantageous in scenarios requiring detailed examination or clear scaling of documents, specifically at scales between 1"=300’ and 1"=400’. Its fine line weights facilitate precise zooming, crucial in engineering or mapping contexts where readability and clarity at large scales are critical .

Having multiple printer driver configuration files allows for extensive customization of print outputs according to specific needs. For instance, different line weights and paper sizes address various documentation requirements, and features like enabling optional content for PDFs support nuanced editing capabilities. Such diversity in configuration options ensures that all possible printing demands are met efficiently, enhancing the flexibility and quality of final outputs as per ODOT standards .

The odotAB_printer.pltcfg and odotCD_printer.pltcfg files are crucial for ensuring that ODOT documents are printed with the correct line weights on specific paper sizes compatible with their requirements. The odotAB_printer.pltcfg utilizes ANSI A (8.5x11) and ANSI B (11x17) paper sizes, while the odotCD_printer.pltcfg is intended for use with ARCH C (18x24) and ANSI D (22x34) paper sizes. This specificity helps maintain consistency and quality across all printed materials .

The odotsizes_PDF.pltcfg is a PDF printer driver configuration with ODOT line weights and options for nine different paper sizes, including a maximum size of 200"x200" . In contrast, the odotsizes_PDF_levels.pltcfg also includes these features but adds the capability to have 'Enable Optional Content' set to 'On' and 'Print Optional Content' set to 'As Created', allowing for the adjustment of displayed levels in a viewer without affecting the print .

The primary function of the BDS_tiff_400DPI_G4.pltcfg printer driver file is to create TIFF files in G4 format with 400 DPI for uploading into the Bridge Data System (BDS).

The printer.pltcfg file serves a general purpose as the default printer driver configured for ODOT line weights. Unlike more specialized files, it uses the default system printer setup and doesn't offer the specific options for file format, DPI, or specialized paper sizes seen in other configurations .

The odotsizes_PDF_1inTo800ft.pltcfg file offers the advantage of employing very fine line weights, which facilitate clear zooming in on text at scales ranging from 1"=500’ to 1"=800’. This can be particularly beneficial in scenarios where detailed examination of text or intricate design elements is necessary, providing better clarity compared to other configurations that do not support such fine scaling .
