What is caption ?
~ Caption is an explanation for a picture or a illustration, especially in a magazine or
newspaper. Caption is usually appears below pictures, photos, graphics, posters,
and even tabels
Captions on Instagram are certainly familiar to Instagram users, because
the use of the word "caption" is common and is almost always used on every
image or video post uploaded to an Instagram account that contains what a person
wants to say in their someone wants to convey in their upload, or someone's
outpouring.
The function of caption
A. Provide Information to Explain the Picture
The first one functions to provide additional information and complement and
describe what is in the picture.
B. Establish Credibility
To add credibility to an image, captions are important for emphasizing the content
of an article, essay or report.
C. Serve Better Engagement
Another function is also to make people interested in seeing the photo and
understanding it.
Generic structure of caption
1. The title, give the information to identify the people and place
in the photo or video.
2. The lead, give the contextual information to help readers and
viewers understand what they are looking at.
3. Section heading, contains the message of the picture or video.
Language Features of Captions
1. complete sentence, you can use various tenses.
(Using complete sentences with the pattern subject plus verb and object, with tense variations.)
2. Prepositional Phrase, a group of words consisting of a preposition, its object, and any words that
modify the object. For examples: (A prepositional phrase is a group of words that contains a
preposition, an object and a word that modifies the object.

• After dinner, I will go around Gangnam.
• My mother has always wanted to live in a cabin by the lake.
3. Infinitive Phrase, infinitive form of verb plus any complement and modifiers. For examples: (An
infinitive phrase is an infinitive form that is added with a verb, a complement. For example:
• He likes to knead the dough slowly
• She helped to cook the soup
• They tell me to dance like nobody’s watching.

4. Adjective Phrase, a group of words used to modify the nouns. For examples:(An adjective
phrase is a group of words used to modify a noun. For example:
• He is so handsome.
• The expensive shoes I wore.
• The song is so lit.
5. Question, used interrogative sentence.
(Using interrogative sentences.)
6. Exclamation, used to express your emotion such as happiness, sadness, anger, etc. For
examples:(Used to express our feelings e.g. happy, sad, angry, etc.)
• Amazing!
• I got an A for a math test!
• Fantastic
How to write a caption?
1. Identification of people and locations that appear in the photo or
video. Professional titles should be included as well as the formal name
of the location. Then, spelling name must be written correctly.
2. Date and the day, the essential information for a news of publication.
The more current photo or video is the better.
3. Context and background, it will help the readers or viewers to
understand the news value of photograph or video.
How to write a caption?
4. Use complete sentences and in the present tense. The use of present
tense can give the sense of immediacy. Although, if it is not possible to
write all in present tense, you can use this tense in the first sentence
and following sentences are not.
5. Write in brief. You can use one or two declarative sentence and if it
contains contextual information, you can extended to a third sentence.

readers about what he is doing.
2. Cutline
This type of caption only mentions who is in the
picture or video and what they are doing. The image
is a screenshot from BTOB's Youtube channel. The
caption of the video-'BTOB-Beatcome #128 (Kingdom
'Missing You' (Theater Ver.)' Practice Behind'.
Through the caption, we can find out who is involved
in the video, BTOB. Then, we also know what they are
doing. They are practicing for Kingdom's 'Missing
You' performance.
3. Summary
This type of caption contains a full description
of the person involved in the document,
graphic, photo or video; what they are doing;
when they are doing it; and why they are doing
it. In the picture, UNESCO writes about how
Elsa Majimbo has become one of the influencers
from East Africa. You can view the original post
on UNESCO's Instagram page.
4. Expanded
This type of caption is more complete than a summary caption. This caption contains
more than one event and also has a quote. The image below is a screenshot of
UNESCO's Instagram account. The summary part talks about the habits of the
women on Jeiju Island. Meanwhile, the quote reads-"The sea's water surface is a
border between life and death. These women frequently cross over this boundary",
means about how the women go beyond their boundaries. You can check out the
