TIME ALLOTMENT: Good for 10 hours.
TEACHER: ARTURO R. NEBRIDA JR

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson the student should be able to:

a. Identify levelling instruments used in installing formworks.

b. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in using levelling instruments.
c. Appreciate the use of levelling instruments.

CODE: TLE_IACP9-12IF-IIa-IVj-2

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

TOPIC: LEVELING INSTRUMENTS

PAGES: 114-121
REFERENCES: Grade 10 Industrial Arts: Carpentry Learners Material
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Visual aids, Learners’ Material or Module
ASSESSMENT: Actual demonstration, direct observation and written test/
questioning.
VALUE AIMS: Carefulness

III. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY

1. REVIEW

Good afternoon class!

Good afternoon sir!
Class, before move on to our
discussion, let’s have first a short
review regarding of what we had
discussed last meeting.
What was our topic last meeting?

Our topic last meeting was about the metal

scaffolds.
Very good!
Again class, what are a metal These are temporary structures outside of a
scaffolds? building that are made of metal poles with
planks used by the workers while
constructing, repairing or cleaning the
building.
How about the different parts of
the metal scaffold?

The different parts of a metal scaffold are

frame, cross-braces, platform, castor, lock
pin.

2. ACTIVITY

Class, this time we will group

yourselves into two. Each group will
list down any instruments or tools
used for levelling and checking
Carpentry works. The group who has
the highest number of listed tools will
serve as the winner. You only have
one minute to do the task.

3. ANALYSIS

Class, what are the different

levelling instruments?

The different levelling instruments are

plumb bob, spirit level, and level hose.
What is the use of a spirit level?

What is a hose level? It is both for guiding and testing the work
according to a vertical and a horizontal
position.

What is a plumb bob? It is one of the best and most accurate tools
for guiding work and in establishing a
horizontal level.

It is a tool with weight and string, used to

check the vertical alignment of structures.
What are the steps in using the
spirit level?

1. For horizontal levelness, hold the

What are the other types of and tool up to the desired level.
sizes of standard masonry end 2. See to it that the vacant space in the
frame? liquid which looks like a bubble is
centered.
3. Then mark line on the levelled
surface.
4. For vertical levelness, position the
tool vertically on the desired
position.
What are the steps in using the 5. Repeat step 2, then mark a straight
plumb bob? line.

1. Fix a lever where you can tie the

string of the plumb bob.
2. Let the weight stretch the string until
it is around 5mm above the ground.
3. Wait until the weight stand still.
4. Then mark the exact direction of the
point of the weight.
5. Mark the line of the string aligned to
the exact location of the point.
6. Make sure that the form is parallel to
Very good! the string of the plumb bob.
What are the steps in using level
hose?
1. Stretch the hose, then put water. If
possible, use colored water to make
it easier to see.
2. Examine the whole length of the
hose to make sure that no bubbles
(vacant spaces) exist. If bubbles
exist, remove the water then put
water once more.
3. Allow the water level to settle, then,
mark one side of the structure; and
position one end of the hose with
water on this side.
4. Place the other end of the hose on
the other side and watch until the
liquid holds.
5. Then, mark this side, and mark
clearly.
6. In case of doubt the levelness, repeat
the procedure.
What are the stress on materials?
They are flexibility, elasticity, shear stress,
and axial stress.

What is meant by flexibility of

materials? It is the ability of material to be bent
repeatedly without damage or injury.

What is elasticity?
It is the ability of an object to return
quickly to its original shape and size after
being bent, stretched, or squashed.
What about a shear stress?
It is the angular deformation of an object,
taken to be the sideways displacement of
two adjacent planes divided by the distance
between them.

What is an axial stress?

It is a twisting direction which is either
tightening or loosening.
Very good!

4. ABSTRACTION

Again class, what are the different

levelling instruments?
1. Spirit level
2. Level hose
3. Plumb bob

Very good! How about the different

stress on materials?
1. Flexibility
2. Elasticity
3. Shear stress
4. Axial stress

5. APPLICATION

Class, this time each one of you will

demonstrate on how to use the
different levelling materials.

IV. EVALUATION

Multiple Choice: Read the statement

carefully. Write only the letter of the
correct answer on your answer sheet.

instruments used both for 1. B
guiding and testing the work 2. D
up to a vertical or horizontal 3. A
position? 4. D
a. Level hose 5. C
b. Spirit level
c. Plumb bob
d. All of these
2. What kind of water is advisable
to put in when using a water
hose level?
a. Distilled water
b. Mineral water
c. Water color
d. Colored water

3. This refers to a twisting

direction either tightening or
loosening of materials?
a. Axial stress
b. Flexibility
c. Shear stress
d. Elasticity

4. Which of the following is NOT a

levelling instrument?

b. Lever bar
c. Plumb bob
d. Steel square

5. What kind of tool that has

string and weight at the end?
a. Hose level
b. Spirit level
