T he main theme of salman rushdios free radio is perception versus reality .

In the short story


ramani’s imaginative mind persives completely different world which is opposite to his reality .

In the short story ramani’s a ricksaw driver who fall in love with a widow . However , The narrator who
is the guardian of ramani disaprovs the relationship . One day, narrator meets Ramani and he astoniged
to see Ramani’s expectation for a free radio from Government . Ramani tells everyone in this town that
he will recive a free radio soon . His day dream shatters when the other man of the caraven beat him .
After the incident Ramani leaves the town and went to Bombay to persiu his carrear in acting . Later; the
narrator recives a letter from Ramani about the successfull life in Bombay .

story is the retire high school teacher who enjoys the high social status . The narretor see from the
distance that the intimate relationship between the main protagonist of the story Ramani a ricksaw
puller and the thief widow who was attractive vicious and 10 years older then him and also have 5
children from her previous marriage . Ramani is the naïve ricksaw puller who is handsome , goodlooking
and inherent his proffetion from his father .

In the short story Salman rushdio makes reference of the real historical events that took place in India .
the emergency period 1975- 1977 during the prime minister Indira Gandhi decleard the state of
emergency from article 375 and rule by decree . In this time The Sanjay Gandhi who is the son of the
prime minister Indira Gandhi lanched a campaigns to forced vacectomy is the Main theme of the story .

The other theme of the story is persivetion versus reality . Ramani imaginative mind completely different
world which is opposite to his reality . Ramani always belive in fantasis about being flim star or recive a
free radio from the government for under doing the vacestomy

The relationship between fiction and reality is another theme of the story . Ramani easily belive in
fantacies about being flimstar or recive a free radio transistor from the government . The reality became
blured when ramani pretend that he has already a radio . Even the other man of the reality half
participle in his dream . Ramani’s imganative mind already fetal . Here the imagatative is refected to the
denger of the propaganda .
