Carrying the Microscope
Grasp the microscope with both hands:
one hand on the arm (curved part) and the
other supporting the base.

Placing the Microscope
Lower carefully onto the lab table
ensuring it is on a flat surface and away
from the edge.

Attach to power, turn on the light source,
and lower the stage completely away from
the objective lens. (Turn large knob
counterclockwise).

4 Handling Glass Slides


Using a glove, hold the slide by its
edges avoiding contact with with the
center where the speciment will be
located (assuming a prepared slide).

Placing the Slide
Carefully place the slide on the stage
ensuring the specimen is centered over
the hole. If the stage has clips, use
them to secure the slide in place.

Start with lowest magnification objective (e.g.
4x). Turn the large knob clockwise to move the
stage upward keeping the lens a safe distance
from the slide to prevent crushing the slide or
specimen.

Look through the eyepiece while turning the
large knob (course) to bring the specimen
into rough focus. Then, use the small knob
(fine) to sharpen the image.

Observing & Exploring 8


Observe the specimen details and
structures. Adjust the amount of light
passing through the specimen if
needed (diaphragm under the stage).

9 Increasing Magnification
Rotate the objective ring to the next
highest magnification (e.g 10x) taking care
to maintain distance between lens and
slide. Adjust focus & continue to explore.

Cleaning Up
Turn off Light Source.
Unplug Microscope
Remove the slide from the stage and
store it in designated box.
Carefully return microscope to cabinet.
Discard glove(s) and wash hands.
