Selection of an Injection Molding Machine In general, injection molding machines are not designated for some special products, but usually designated for many applications including scores of kinds or products. Therefore, injection molding machines need wide adjustment range and are required to have high reproduciblity. Described below are the hints for selection of an injection molding machine from the point of view of available products. 4, With Regard to Mold Clamping 1.1, Necessary Mold Clamping Force The necessary mold clamping force is the “product" of effective mold internal pressure and total ‘mold internal projection area, The desirable margin is about 20% of the calculated “product.” 1.2 Mold Installation Sizes The following sizes should be checked: (1) Check the height and width of mold for matching with space between tie-bars and with platen size. (2) Check for equality between the mounting hole pitch and platen hole pitch in the case of direct installation. (3) Check for security of a necessary space when the installation jigs are used. (4) Check the ejector rod diameter, pitch and locate ring size for adequacy. (8) Check to see that the thickness of mold isin the range of minimum and maximum limits. (6) Check the mold opening/closing stroke for sufficient margin, 2, With Regard to Injection and Plasticization. 2.1 Injection Capacity The maximum injection capacity shown in injection molding machine catalogues is the value applicable to GPPS (specific gravity 1.05). The maximum injection weight of resin to be used is dependent on specific weight of the resin. In the case of PMMA (s.g. 1.19), for example, it is possible to mold a product of 13% larger in weight ratio For selection of screw diameter, however, it is ideal to set the injection capacity to a value in the range of 20 to 80% of the maximum capacity, also the optimum value being dependent on injection pressure. In the case of the in-line screw, it seems that all of resin at the maximum plasticizing capacity can be used for injection. In practice, however, 3 to 5 mm of cushion will remain under holding pressure and, when no back flow check ring is used, some back flow will occur. Also specific volume of molten resin is larger than that at room temperature (in the case of GPS, for example, 1.01 em’lg at 200°C is 6% larger than 0.95 omg at room temperature). Therefore, actually usable injection capacity is to be estimated as about 90° of maximum injection capacity. 2.2 Injection Pressure Resin pressure caused by hydraulic pressure is not applied to the mold cavity as it is, but is reduced to of original pressure because pressure transmission rate is lowered by cooling. It is also important to take an injection pressure required for assuring necessary injection ‘speed into consideration.Selection of an Injection Molding Machine 2.3 Plasticizing Capacity ‘The value of plasticizing capacity shown in the injection molding machine catalogues is applicable to GPPS, Such a value cannot be used for other resins to decide accurate plasticizing capacity. This is because of differences in pellet shape, resin specific heat, coefficient of friction to heating cylinder and specific gravity. Fig. 1 shows the difference in plasticizing capacity between resins on the same screw. Although plasticizing capacity increases with screw revolution speed, that of highly viscous resins may be limited to a low value by oil motor torque. Plasticizing capacity (kg/h) 8 100 180-200-3830) at ‘Screw revolution speed (tpm) Fig. 1 Difference in Plasticizing Capacity between Resins (Screw dia. 45) In actual estimate, select a proper screw diameter on the basis of value applicable to GPPS so that plasticizing can be finished within the expected time,Making a Choice of Screw Assembly With the molding materials increasingly diversifying and becoming highly functional and the molds and products being made more precisely, it is the trend of recent molding work to require the screw assemblies tor molding machines to be able to exert increasingly large capability in kneading, Plasticizing, and filing process. To meet those requirements, the SGM/SHM series use the "US-III Screws" which has been newly developed on the basis of our long experience in the fiold and theoretical analysis of screw. ‘The following are the features of the US- III screws and instructions on how to make a choice of screw. 1, Features of US-III Screws (1) Meeting the requirement for high injection pressure In the SGM/SHM series, a choice of standard screw causes an injection pressure of 2200 kgt/em* on the small diameter side and about 1800 kgflcm* on the large diameter side. Furthermore, it is possible to choose an undersize screw which produces the larger injection pressure of about 2700 kgtfom® (2) Improved screw dimensions for high-performance molding For the US-II screws, sorew dimensions have been improved through numbers of experiments and theoretical analysis to improve drag flow which largely influences the plasticizing stabilty and plasticizing ability. Also, improved kneading ability largely contributes to uniformity of moiten resin and accuracy of products, (3) Accommodation to wide range of molding materials The US-II screws are avallable in wide range of types and materials to accommodate themselves to molding materials increasingly diversifying, so that the optimum screw just fitting in with the material to be molded can be selected, 2. Making Choice of US-III Screws (1) Avallable screw ‘The SGMISHM series are provided with an SD type screw for standard specification, The SD type screws are versatile enough to fit with wide range of molding materials. A wide variety of special screws other than the SD type screw are also available to get the better accommodation to the characteristic of specific molding material to be used. (2) How to choose a screw In this selection, first make a choice of screw type and the make a choice of screw material and nozzle type. Table 1 will help you select a screw type. Table 2 will be helpful for selecting a screw material and nozzle type.Making a Choice of Screw Assembly Table 1 Selection of Screw Type Resin Serewtype| sp SF PM PVC Polyethylene (PE) ° © 4 x «| Polypropylene (PP) ° © A x & | Povyatyrene (PS) ° e A . > Rigid pobyiny chloride (HPVC) x x x © Soft polyvinyl chloride (LPVC) x x x © | Acrylonitrile styrene (AS) ° ° A x 3 | Acnfonitie-butadene- alyrene ABS) ° ° a x 3 8 | Polymethacrylate (Acrylics) (PMMA) ° ° Aa x | Polycarbonate (PC) ° © | A x | Polyacetal (POM) ° ota x ag Polyamide (Nylon) (PA) oO ° x x re Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) oO ° 4 x EB | Potybutylene terephthalate (PBT) ° ° A x ig |_Mestted PPO (Noryl resin) ° ° 4 x | Polphenyone suiée PPS) ° ° A x & | Plastics magnet, ceramics x x © x Pia al: Features of screw 3 : 3 a5 5 1) 8, | z Legend @: Most suitable (O: Suitable A: Applicable with condition attached X: UnsultableTable 2 Selection of Screw Material and Nozzle Type Seem ‘terial of screw assembly Nozzle specification pean ose Siandard] Wear- | Wear Open | FTC] Neodie ‘and | and ‘ype. | nozzle | valve | Remark: corn loreson (Slane. ‘ype | Pia! rein) hoe | = — O18 z — 01 'S@V 40 NVS| Supsisel_ 2 poop | poo | sv [75,202 ove, 002,597) sa una soueg euninsen oon] on 8 FE SSL sped sions (ond | & ‘rena ure na ise) | \ozz— oa) (ose - 00z)|(osz — 0021] yoy -Aucerion sutyrew wns | esodind 2 | me | vom | [ad ao SN | Teme : a T r 3 fe (o¥z— 002] \ozz — ocai|(oxz — o¢2)| yo| Sunsise| poop | sod | sy [PMzz (52 | 052 | pus seoweysreuese counsee:| =H Bec man poe eo sree ~ out T yeilose = sen] eeisr wb eamenodun mal odin een | pon | oy [ore soes) ove son = san) ee nance ans re k \ al ‘ "eouRis|s| (re 012 012)(012—000| es jeowmin poop oust wuojeoxa| poco | sr |%%,,2 cae a2"| Sands wan Ssoupve oer poe oveevea poo WOH = (coz — oot) loz — oe)|(ozz — oan) ‘a9 joe vet oye sa veo | or [Ome Oe Gee | a san Bvetg I oy a) wows items 29 uo = = {ove — on] (ozz— oanliozz— oon] nea teosee poo 7 (Sagp) smashed wopora| or | 0 gO, 200) | Sacha ome we pen] SASL a wee ‘are | ropes | 2, | ezwz | szmsiz oe Ben | Canepa Samoa omemdan Bows ws Characteristics of Thermoplastic Resin & General Molding Conditions [ suopipuog Bulpjow je10U05 ¥ uIseY onSe|doweUL Jo sonsHa}OeIeyD ®(nosso - woseo 0} 08 — 82,6 «1 oxeaidée axe seumssodue jos pounds Auouio} 241) “(enoge pue 2,092 AUsuLtO) ‘2.08+ pur (9,082 —2,022 Auautio) 3, $2 "(nojea pul) OOF Kets) 2, ozs fe od pins Sues enteiedua ez/e1z ‘perejee | AQuiosse mains eon-ofzzou-vado on UOUM (9 13 02 pu oq aay oy oussojay Gunqeur hq on payaate aq prods auresodaion undo e425 Opes yu Kod ‘Arex fou Jed PUR Ye Jo} Sua aineiedwer sedoig Ywlod mo] seu = Jas oq Phoys zopuyio Gueoy ayo aunjuadsa|sIuavoduoD esAqUICoLOU Dusen SJEUeIEW 1034 (et 9) stuuestogas sour eatin ete 0 yy Abs on Pro slugs ome ado. oN Sameo -epuigp ofe8 0 wouunbe eile onpan 6 adous ao Buiooe ie ten lou pus stains aeadun abut Bea ‘Soulomxe enfoodsas Se OAd BIPH pue Sag Bulsh"vosedueo jo nea ey axe Auigepjou se fom se Aves [CULO 7 SOUTER, -saimeieluo; unuiutu pue wntyreu otespu Soseyvored U seunbiy seoveyedxe ine uo pesea ale onoge eUoNpuce Bupjou eIEUED (I :OvoWoN ‘hued {ose — ozzilioee — ooei|(oce — o0e|(ore — oF) equetoow pus ‘anaysnquioouou eouerssa (saad my et | oe | Povo | pe | oe oe | oe) | ois | one “yemuoys ur fsog sainreadsar you | ops oveuousAog pe mo eT ee xe squadord sues50 | (sesso uerectauen pum snouos | _IWAa) seujodco ae (os: —ozucee—osnioze -os1|oze— 050) oa se cpeatan a ‘Sasan | Seasn | 9© | pee | 2004 | oe 005 010e, 950i0z, 081/027, 950) sad func eats ou sum =| sete tw oh orz — oval{ovz — oc2|(o9z —oezl|(ovz — orz)] eau 10 sjquuouo ‘yo surebe course! ‘oz ‘see eee eae ‘sez ‘ore, poop ‘Atedoud jeaunete poo eam S/T el on | o [cee —se2 coe — ora ooe— ovo — oc] “age wuss 9209 bait - 08 — _ sas ‘soz 08z 08z oR ‘Wo 20 wey “seem ISUIEDE €9UEISIS8! Variation in thickness will be a medium of checking clamping force. assumption that mean resin pressure in runner Is two times as high as that in cavity, () The above-mentioned calculation method is only for the purpose of determining the ‘initial condition. Mold clamping force must be corrected so as to match the actual results of molding (i) Mold clamping force does not only affect occurrence of flash, but also affects thickness and weight (ii) To simply calculation, the above-mentioned equations (a), (b) and (c) are based on theConsideration to be Given to Purging Purging is a process of purging melt from the heating cylinder. Depending on the state of molding machine, the property of material used, and the purpose of purging, the following matters should be taken into careful consideration (1) When molding operation is interrupted Thermal deterioration and thermal decomposition of hot melt remaining in the heating cylinder progresses with time. To prevent this, itis necessary to replace the deteriorated material with fresh one before thermal decomposition results. It is also necessary to purge the material reduced in viscosity or deteriorated by heat with fresh one prior to the start of molding, In such a case, perform purging of about 5 to 10 shots, though the optimurn number of purging shots depends on the discharge (metering) quantity per shot. (2) When material is changed (from material type A to type B) (A) In the case where the allowable setting range of heating cylinder temperature for material A overlaps with that for material B, purging can be made at overlapping temperatures, Example: Replacing material type A (allowable heating cylinder temperature setting range 180 ~ 210°C ) with material type B (allowable heating cylinder temperature setting range 180 ~ 250°C). [Material replacing procedure] 1. Close the hopper. Purge the material type A completely from the heating cylinder at a heating cylinder temperature (about 200°C ) which the allowable temperature ranges of both material types A and B cover in common, 2. Take back material type A remaining in the hopper. Blow the material (dust) adhering to the inside of hopper and material feeding port off with compressed air. 3. At a heating cylinder temperature of about 200°C , pour in material type B and carry out purging. 4, After material in the heating cylinder is replaced by material type B completely, change the heating cylinder temperature to a molding temperature suited to material type B. ee(8) When the allowable setting range of heating cylinder temperature for material A does not overlap with that for material B Example: Replacing material type A (allowable heating cylinder temperature setting range 290 ~ 320°C) with material type B (allowable heating cylinder temperature setting range 190 ~ 250°C). [Material replacing procedure] 1. Close the hopper. Purge the material ype A completely from the heating cylinder at a heating cylinder temperature (about 300°C ). 2, Take back material type A remaining in the hopper. Blow the material (dust) adhering to the inside of hopper and material feeding port off with compressed air. 3, At a heating cylinder temperature of about 300 °C , pour in material type C. (allowable heating cylinder temperature setting range 190 ~ 300°C ) which covers both the allowable heating cylinder temperature setting range of material type A and that of ‘material type B, and carry out purging until material in the heating cylinder Is replaced ‘completely by material type C. Perform steps 1 and 2. Change the heating cylinder temperature to a material type B molding temperature (about 230°C). 6. Atthe heating cylinder temperature of about 230°C , pour in material type B and perform purging unti material type C in the heating cylinder is replaced by material type B completely. * Selection of material type C Usually polyethylene (PE) or general polystyrene (GPPS) is used. itis important for saving of molding material and purging time to make proper selection not only by ‘considering the allowable temperature setting ranges for material types A and B, but also by taking melt viscosity at a set temperature into consideration, (8) In the case of corrosive material ‘When using corrosive material such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the cylinder and screw would be corroded if cylinder temperature is lowered while corrosive material being left behind in the heating cylinder, To prevent this, purge the corrosive material at a low temperature (about 150°C ) In the foregoing procedure using a material exclusive for purging use or a regenerated transparent acrylic resin (PMMA). Then, expel the purging material from the cylinder by the succeeding purging operation using polyethylene or polystyrene. (4) Checking the degree of substitution During purging process, check the expelled material for changes in transparency, appearance, color tone, etc. Insufficient substitution of material is suspected as far as thin threadiike stripes are ‘found in the material injected from the nozzie. When such stripes disappear, it may be roughly judged that substitution of material has been complete, a ieINJ. PRESSURE-HYD. PRESSURE SGM-C110 INJ. PRESSURE-HYO. Centralize the grounding wires from the take-out robot, hopper drier, mold temperature regulator, etc. to the main grounding terminal on the molding machine. This equals the potential of the molding machine and al peripheral equipment, effectively increasing safety and reducing noise For the molding machine provided with an auxiliary plug socket, that socket is connected to the grounding terminal on the machine with a line corresponding to the grounding wire mentioned above, so that ground- ing of peripheral equipment can be facilitated by utilizing that socket Hopper drier Molding machine srounding ermal Beutipment ong independent pounding Mold temperature puator z ‘The power source for a molding machine should be separated from that for other noise generative equipment (commutator motors, arc welders, clec- tric spark machines, thyristor phase-converters, etc.) under no circumstances the grounding line for a molding machine shovld be used in common with the said equipment. Independent grounding of the molding machine is recommended in such a case. ‘The independent grounding ensures the noise- free, stable operation of the molding machine. In the ease where the peripheral equipment has already been purchased, it is recommended to add a surge absorber to the purchased equipment Since all parts in the contol cabinet of the molding machine are arranged by taking noise prevention into consideration, customers are kept from fiting any additional celay andior solenoid in the control cabinet freely.
