Kamias and Lemon Dishwashing Liquid Study

The document discusses developing an alternative dishwashing liquid using extracts from Kamias (Averrhoa bilimbi) and lemon (Citrus limon). Kamias and lemon contain compounds like saponins, citric acid, and flavonoids that make them effective for cleaning and removing bacteria. The study aims to test a homemade dishwashing liquid from these extracts to see if it is a safe, inexpensive, and effective alternative to commercial brands. Specifically, the study will evaluate the ease of production, smell, texture, safety, cleaning power, and shelf life of the kamias-lemon dishwashing liquid. The researchers hypothesize that the alternative liquid will work well as a dishwashing

Introduction

Germs are everywhere. Germs are transmitted by direct contact with people or

animals, by contaminated food, water, surfaces, and air. According to the Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention (CDC), germs are tiny organisms that can cause infections or

diseases. Some common types of germs include bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Germs can

spread from person to person through coughing, sneezing, or contact with contaminated

surfaces. It is important to practice good hygiene habits such as washing your hands often and

cleaning surfaces to prevent the spread of germs.

The Philippines is well-known around the world for its wide variety of fruits, which

produce an abundance of fruit that is rich in nutrients—even more so than certain well-known

fruits like Kamias, which is not given as much value as other well-known fruits. These fruits

have their own season, and their abundance frequently leads to spoilage. (Kalwij and Palmer,

2015)

People currently tend to use goods, materials, and inventions derived from various

renewable and non-renewable resources. This is especially true in this age of technology and

advancement. Dishwashing liquid is one specific example of such. For nearly a decade, it has

been a common cleaning product. In the Philippines, where people frequently experience

various issues, dishwashing liquid usage is noticeable. To make dishes as clean as possible,

every household has the same issue about the type and brand of dishwashing liquid.

Dishwashing soap, also referred to as dish detergent or dish soap, is a detergent that

helps in dishwashing. Typically, it is a surfactant blend that foams heavily and causes little

skin irritation. Along with its primary usage, it is also primarily used for hand washing

dishes, cutlery, glasses, and culinary equipment in a sink (Bradford,2018). We all know that

there are many brands of liquid detergent today. Some contains chemical, but some are
organic. This study the researchers aims to develop a alternative dishwashing liquid from

Averrhoa bilimbi (Kamias) and Citrus Limon (Lemon).

Kamias (Averrhoa bilimbi), which belongs to the Oxalidaceae family, commonly used

as souring condiments in foods due to its acidic properties but can also be used as effective

dishwashing liquid. Kamias is a common tropical fruit found in the forests of Philippines and

Southeast Asia. Several studies reported that Averrhoa bilimbi contains active compound

such us saponins, glucosides, tannins, flavonoids, citric acid, formic acid, contain pectin

compounds, flavonoids, and vitamin C, minerals, calcium oxalate and potassium.

Moreover, several research has revealed that Averrhoa bilimbi, the scientific name of

Cucumber Tree (Kamias), has an antibacterial impact and stain removing properties. The

product is earth friendly. It does not include any hazardous substances that could affect the

environment.

According to Klimek-Szczykutowicz M, Szopa A, Ekiert H. (2020) the Citrus

limon (Lemon), is a tree with evergreen leaves and yellow edible fruits from the

family Rutaceae. The main raw material of Citrus limon is the fruit, particularly the essential

oil and juice obtained from it. The fruit stands out as having well-known nutritional

properties.

Lemons are a fruit that contain an acid that can be used to dissolve stains or as a

cleaning agent, particularly for removing stains from tiles. Lemon juice's acidic nature helps

to eliminate rust and soil stains. It works well when combined with salt to create "an alternate

cleaning agent." It is renowned for having the highest concentration of citric acid among

those citrus fruits ([Link]).

Citrus limon (Lemon) as a dishwashing liquid has become increasingly popular as an

alternative to traditional cleaning agents for its perceived advantages in cost-effectiveness,

effectiveness, and environmental impact. In addition, the study found that lemon citrus was

superior to other detergents at lowering the level of bacteria on plates. Lemon citrus was also

found to be efficient at eliminating odors from dishes in the study, making it a more

appealing option for dishwashing. (T Erfando, SR Cahyani, and N Rita, 2019)

Citrus limon (lemon) contains significant amounts of minerals, citric acid, essential

oils, flavonoids, and other natural compounds like ascorbic acid.

The main purpose of this study is to develop and test a low cost, safe and organic

dishwashing liquid out of Kamias (Averrhoa Bilimbi) and Lemon (Citrus Lemon) extract as

the main ingredients of the product. This study also wants to prove that this Kamias and

Lemon as dishwashing liquid is effective on removing the stains and bacteria. This will help

the people who are vulnerable to germs and bacteria.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to develop and test the alternative dishwashing liquid using Kamias and

lemon extract as the main ingredients.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. How convenient is the product in creating and using it in terms of;

1.1 materials needed.

1.2 ease of procedure

2. How does the alternative dishwashing liquid described in terms of.

2.1 smell

2.2 textures
2.3 safeness

2.4 cleaning capability

3. How long does the alternative dishwashing liquid last in terms of the time of spoilage?

Hypothesis

The effect in the development and testing of alternative dishwashing liquid out of Kamias and

Lemon extract.
