CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the procedures employed in this study. It includes the research
design, research locale, sampling design, materials and procedures, data gathering procedure,
and data analysis strategy on the impact of sleep deprivation on college students' academic
performance.

Research Design
The study was made by a qualitative approach. The qualitative approach was applied to
uncover the opinions of the interviewees at a deeper level of understanding through open,
verbal, and behavioral data collecting. The researchers used an interview method for the data
gathering to successfully answered the questions of “how” and “why.” The study used
phenomenological research for the chosen sleep-deprived college student participants to
identify their knowledge and experiences about the situation. In this case, the researchers
utilized the qualitative approach, interview, and phenomenological research to achieve the
main objectives of the study.

Research Locale

The research was conducted in the researchers' and respondents' residences using the
Zoom internet tool. The respondents were exclusively obtained in the province of Laguna.
Moreover, the researchers chose the area for convenience and to observe the impact of sleep
deprivation on the academic performances of students at several Laguna schools. Four college
students from the province of Laguna were chosen for this study.

Samples and Population of the Study

The researchers interviewed four college students all around Laguna. The researchers
employed them to be their interviewees since some of them are their friends and its easier to
communicate and talk to them. The researchers have the criteria that the college students have
or are experiencing sleep deprivation.

The first participant is a graduating student from Calamba Doctors College in the field of
Medtech. She experienced sleep deprivation due to poor time sleep patterns caused by on-the-
job training at the hospital. The second participant is a college student who studies at the
National University of Laguna. Also has some experience with sleep deprivation in the past but
has gotten through by getting his sleep back. The third participant is a first-year college student
studying Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation at Malayan Colleges Laguna. She is
known to have experienced sleep deprivation due to school life and personal matters. The
fourth participant is a college student studying Bachelor of Science in Accountancy at Malayan
Colleges Laguna. He is said to have suffered from sleep deprivation due to his desire to
graduate, which is why he remains awake until he completes his coursework.

Instrumentation and Procedure

The researchers employed a semi-structured interview, in which they had a list of

questions with expansive inquiries that had to be addressed during the interview. The
researchers used the mediated interview to make it easier for the respondents because they
live in different areas. The interview was conducted via an online application called Zoom.
Furthermore, an audio recorder was utilized during the interview to record the respondent's
responses, as well as the researchers' note-taking with a pen and paper. The interviewees were
composed of four college students in the province of Laguna. The interview was performed to
collect the responses of the respondents. Finally, the researchers will analyze the findings and
give generalizations about the impact of sleep deprivation on college students' academic
performance.

Method of Data Collection

The researchers conducted a virtual interview via zoom that consisted of the
researchers and one of the respondents. The researchers ask the respondents about their
experiences with sleep deprivation and how it affected their academic performance. The
researchers also conducted a document analysis via RRL in which they got their interview
questions and follow up questions. The researchers also transcribed the interview and reviewed
the participants' answers in which they’ll compare it to the RRL if some of the effects are the
same or the effects lined up; that's where the researchers get some of the data.

Data Analysis Procedure

Since the study used a qualitative method, coding and thematic analysis will be used in
data analysis. The researchers will conduct an interview and will look through the transcript to
locate keywords and phrases for their meanings. In the process of the analysis, coding is a must
when highlighting significant words and labeling and collecting qualitative data to identify
various themes together with their related contents. The thematic analysis will be applied to
patterns that can be identified through redundant data analysis, data coding, and theme
formation. Furthermore, the thematic analysis will attempt to elicit information about the
respondents' viewpoints, experiences, insights, and values from a collection of qualitative data,
which is the interview transcript.

Common questions

Powered by AI

The use of semi-structured interviews offers several strengths, such as flexibility in questioning, allowing for in-depth insights into personal experiences of sleep deprivation among college students. It enables researchers to explore areas prompted by initial responses, giving room for spontaneous and rich data collection . However, limitations include potential biases induced by the interviewer's presence or questioning style and the reliance on the articulateness of respondents, which may lead to varying depth in responses. Also, data collected via semi-structured interviews can be time-consuming to transcribe and analyze .

The research methodology ensures depth and reliability of insights through the use of a qualitative approach, specifically phenomenological research, which allows for a deep exploration of participants' experiences and opinions . By employing semi-structured interviews, researchers could gather expansive, open-ended responses, facilitating a detailed understanding of the 'how' and 'why' behind sleep deprivation effects. Furthermore, this interaction took place over Zoom, enabling detailed audio-visual data collection supplemented by transcription, which strengthens the reliability of insights gained . The data was analyzed using coding and thematic analysis, ensuring a rigorous examination of the respondents' viewpoints and experiences, thus providing comprehensive insights .

Using Zoom for conducting interviews proved effective by enabling real-time, face-to-face interaction despite geographical barriers, allowing for immediate data collection without the need for travel. This choice minimized logistical constraints and facilitated an accessible medium for both interviewers and participants to engage in dialogue . However, challenges include potential technical issues such as connectivity problems, which could affect the quality of data collection, and the absence of physical cues that might be present in in-person interviews, possibly impacting non-verbal communication analysis .

The study ensures alignment with existing literature by incorporating document analysis through a Review of Related Literature (RRL) process, whereby the researchers formulated interview questions based on previous findings. After collecting interview data, they cross-referenced participants' responses with established RRL data to identify consistencies or discrepancies, thus enabling them to verify and contextualize findings within empirical frameworks . By comparing results against existing studies, the researchers could validate their conclusions, lending credibility to their insights .

Coding and thematic analysis play crucial roles in the qualitative analysis by organizing and interpreting the data collected through interviews. Coding involves identifying and labeling significant words and phrases from transcripts, which helps in categorizing the data into meaningful themes . Thematic analysis further examines these themes to extract patterns and insights, facilitating a structured understanding of the impacts of sleep deprivation, as told by the students . These processes allow researchers to systematically distill comprehensive narratives into key findings, aligning participant experiences with the study's objectives .

The small sample size of four college students limits the generalizability of the study's findings, as it may not fully capture the diverse experiences and impacts of sleep deprivation across a broader population of students. While the qualitative approach allows for in-depth analysis of these few participants, it could introduce bias or overemphasize specific experiences that may not reflect wider trends . However, the depth of insight gained from each participant can provide valuable foundational understanding, informing more extensive research designs .

The researchers needed to ensure that ethical considerations such as informed consent, confidentiality, and the right to withdraw were upheld. Participants need to be fully informed about the study's purpose, procedures, and any potential risks, and they should freely agree to participate without coercion. Ensuring the confidentiality of sensitive data like personal experiences with sleep deprivation is crucial, possibly by anonymizing the data. Moreover, the researchers must remain neutral, preventing their personal relationships with the respondents from influencing responses, thereby preserving the study's integrity .

The researchers focused on obtaining respondents from the province of Laguna, specifically targeting college students who had experienced sleep deprivation. They chose participants from various disciplines, including a Medtech student, a marine transportation student, an accountancy student, and another from a general college setting to reflect different experiences and pressures leading to sleep deprivation . Although the sample size was small, the researchers selected participants who met specific criteria (experiencing or having experienced sleep deprivation), ensuring relevance and direct applicability to the research question .

The researchers chose participants from the province of Laguna primarily for convenience, facilitating easier communication given their familiarity and accessibility, as some respondents were friends of the researchers . This familiarity helped ensure that the researchers could easily engage with respondents who were sleep-deprived, supporting the collection of reliable data tailored to the research context . Additionally, selecting participants from a specific locale allows for a focused examination of sleep deprivation impacts in a localized educational environment .

The qualitative approach allows for a comprehensive exploration of subjective experiences, delving into the specific reasons and personal narratives behind sleep deprivation among college students . It uses open-ended interviews to capture nuanced data, providing insights into how individuals perceive and cope with their sleep-related challenges, reflecting their unique circumstances and personal contexts. This method captures the depth of personal experiences, which is critical for understanding the multifaceted impacts of sleep deprivation .
