The Problem and Its Background

1.0 Introduction

Gathering reliable sources for academic purposes has led us to many different ways of getting ideas and to
have prior knowledge; two of them are libraries and the internet. With the use of it, students and faculty can have
the sources of information and enhance their work and to have more effective answers to their questions.
Kumah, Cynthia H.,(2015) states that information is a vital and an indispensable component of any academic
environment. It makes for effectiveness in any academic system. Both faculty and students need to use
information daily in their various academic endeavors.

According to The National Library of the Philippines (2019) public libraries have been part of the Philippine
cultural landscape for more than a century now. Many Filipino youths then and now have visited public libraries
for several purposes mostly connected to education, literacy, social, economic and cultural issues and
development. We can say that public libraries are essential to the growth of Philippine society. It is important that
our libraries are up to date to give the latest knowledge and information to everyone.

As of now, we are living in a world where information is just a click away. With the use of the internet, we
could easily do things in a few steps. The Internet as a medium of communication helps people to enhance their
work and communicate to people hassle free and effectively.

In addition and according to Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences (2011), since the emergence of the
Internet, it has become an important medium of communication as well as a research and leisure tool. The
reason is that it provides many opportunities to many people around the world in many different ways. Not only
the Internet, but the other new digital technologies also took their places in daily life. The wide access to these
technologies improves people’s lives and provides great opportunities. People have started to access any kind of
information easily on the Internet and also use it for social, educational and entertainment purposes.
The things that are being stated made the researchers come up with the idea of analyzing the difference in
libraries and the internet as a source of information. This research is about comparative analysis between
libraries and the internet as reliable sources among Grade 11 home economics (HE) students of MCA
Montessori School.

1.1 Background of the study

 In modern times, access to information is more relevant for academic work in all higher institutions. The role
of academic libraries is to provide accessible information resources to the entire academic community. Libraries
make electronic sources of information available to users because e-learning is giving a new dimension in
learning and hence affecting education in many ways. The revolution in the world of Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) has shifted the content of libraries resources from printed information to online
information resources. Hence, the content of libraries is not restricted to physical formats such as books,
magazines, or journals. Libraries are now shifting from traditional printed resources to the use of electronic-driven
services. This makes internet use a necessary condition for the effective utilization of library resources.

The academic library serves an important role in supporting the principal functions of research and
scholarship of higher education. Besides the old-fashioned way of providing access to knowledge, libraries also
offer an affable environment as a meeting place that allows users to complete their assignments, undertake their
projects or revise their studies.

According to Kumah (2015), This study was conducted to compare Internet use and library use among
graduate students. It was based on the assumption that graduate students use the Internet more than the library.
Literature in the library and the Internet were reviewed. The researcher adopted a convenient sampling technique
to select the sample for the study. Data was collected using questionnaires. Collected data was statistically
analyzed and interpreted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Findings of the study indicated
students do not bypass the library in satisfying their information needs. They use both the library and the Internet,
although Internet usage was more than the library, hence the Internet was the most preferred source of
information. It was recommended that the library should be upgraded to meet recent advancement in research.

According to October (2011), Libraries are established for the systematic collection, organization,
preservation and dissemination of knowledge and information. It is very important for man to preserve and
maintain the valuable knowledge and information contained in the books and documents because we want to
preserve our knowledge and wisdom for the coming generations. By preserving the documents in a library this
knowledge can be made available to others so that they can benefit from it.

Accordingly, Internet access in schools has increased greatly over the last 20 years. This shows that
more students are relying on the Internet for their academic needs than in any other area. In recent years the
Internet has become a very effective and popular tool used by students for their academic work as well as for
other various purposes including entertainment and communication.

The Internet provides a collaborative environment for sharing as well as to see information on a wide,
divergent, and variety of subjects. Consequently, its use has become very popular among the student community
which is used by them to complement their studies. The availability of the Internet and electronic resources may
harm the use of an institution's library by students, while socio-economic and demographic characteristics of
students can also have a significant impact. It is possible that while some students go to the library to use the
available services, others may not go to the library, perhaps due to the availability of alternatives like personal e-
resources and Internet connection at their service.

The Internet indeed has a large amount of information, but the relevance of the information to academic
work especially about quality and authenticity is guaranteed largely by the one provided by the library and should
not be neglected.

The information sources from both the Library and the Internet should complement each other to facilitate
teaching-learning, research, and knowledge dissemination. This study attempts to compare the Libraries and
internet as reliable sources among HE grade 11 students of MCA Montessori school – Taguig

According to Cdadmin (2019) Internet plays a very vital role in education. There is no doubt that in this
modern era everyone prefers Google for their queries, problems or doubts. Popular search engines like Google,
Yahoo, etc. are the topmost choice of people as they offer an easy and instant reach to the vast amount of
information in just a few seconds. It contains a wealth of knowledge that can be searched at any time. The
internet has introduced improvements in technology, communication, and online entertainment.

Finding information for academic tasks is an essential part of the student's life. In order to excel in their
studies, students require a large amount of reliable information that they can use in academic written work.
Libraries and the internet are major sources of information that students commonly use, for those purposes.

Through the reliability of the sources, it results in a specific answer, accurate information, and factual
outcome. However, there are different ways on how to get reliable sources, two of them are the use of libraries
and the internet.

Broadly speaking, libraries and the internet offer a great deal of information for students to explore. But
besides their similarities, they differ in terms of time, reliability, and accessibility. Students should carefully
consider the benefits and drawbacks of both and use the appropriate mechanism to complete their academic
assignments successfully.

1.2 Research Objectives

General Objectives

This study is about the comparative analysis between libraries and the internet as reliable sources among grade
11 HE student of MCA Montessori school – Taguig. The researchers also aim to know the difference between
libraries and the internet in terms of gathering reliable sources. This is a quantitative type of research. The study
to be done is a non-experimental type and comparative research because it uses a comparison of two variables.
The overall goal that must be achieved to answer the problem is to collect the respondent’s answers with the use
of a survey and Likert scale. The research is composed of specific objectives which gives a clearer idea and
more precise context.

The researchers aim to gather the demographic profile of the grade 11 HE student of MCA Montessori
school – Taguig. In this way, it can help the researchers to know more about the respondents. The researchers
will collect the respondent’s answers in a survey form. Next is to evaluate the results of the survey. And lastly, to
have a conclusion and share it to the public.

To avoid scattered and unnecessary insights into the problem, the researchers must first establish the
study's focus and limitations. They must also give survey questions that must be answered by the research
participants and that will help to provide more information about the study. The researchers will then evaluate
numerical data from the participants' survey responses to determine the outcome or result.

1. To ascertain which factors encourage or discourage students from using libraries.

2. To determine the extent to which the Internet helps students with their academic work.

3. To find out what types of needs influence the preference of one information source over another.

4. To identify issues that students encounter when using the Internet and the library.

5. To find out the effectiveness of libraries and the internet as resources in their education.

1.3 Scopes And Limitations

This research is delimited to students taken understudy at MCA Montessori school – Taguig The research
was carried out among grade 11 students from the academic year 2022-2023. The primary goal of the research
is to discover how students use the library and internet resources to obtain the information they seek while
preparing for assignments and doing an academic task.

This study focuses on the user's habits and information needs. Based on the student's responses, this
study is primarily analytical and descriptive. With the consent of participants, data collection will be limited to
digital tools such as instant messaging platforms such as Messenger.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The study's significance is to gain an understanding of the role of a library and internet resources in a
student's life. This study will determine the comparative analysis between library and internet. The researchers’
target participants or population of this study is the grade 11 senior high school HE student of MCA Montessori
school. The student participants along with the other sector will benefit from this study by assisting them in
determining relevant and accurate tools that are more reliable to use in searching ideas.
 In MCA Montessori school – Taguig, there has not been any comparative study on grade 11 HE students'
use of the library and the Internet as reliable sources. The Internet indeed has a large amount of information, but
the relevance of the information to academic work especially regarding quality and authenticity is guaranteed
largely by the one provided by the library and should not be neglected. The information sources from both the
library and the Internet should complement each other to facilitate teaching, learning, research, and knowledge
dissemination.

This research can benefit senior high school students at MCA Montessori school, as well as senior high
school students at other schools in Taguig and around the [Link] will also benefit students as well as other
participants such as parents, teachers, and administrators. This can also pave the way for better learning and
knowledge development in the class, allowing kids to succeed in society.

This research might be one of the few studies about the reliability in library and internet that can be a
foundation for a new theory in future research. This research will provide the future researchers’ knowledge
about the topic, and the future researchers may also widen the subject and the scope for further understanding.

1.5 Define any Key Terms or Concepts

●Libraries - a building or room containing collections of books, periodicals, and sometimes films and recorded
music for people to read, borrow, or refer to.

●Internet - a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting
of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

●Reliable Source - A reliable source is one that provides a thorough, well-reasoned theory, argument,
discussion, etc. based on strong evidence.
