If we consider the mathematics world, then it's developed mainly because of the mathematicians who

lived in the past. They have made numerous contributions to advance the world of mathematics to its
current state. One of those brilliant minds is Leonhard Euler, who was a Swiss mathematician, physicist,
logician, geographer, astronomer, and engineer. He was the one who found the studies of graph theory
and topology. Apart from those, he made some discoveries in many other branches of mathematics like
analytic number theory, complex analysis and infinitesimal calculus.

Leonhard Euler was born in 15th of April 1707, in Basel, Switzerland, to Paul III Euler, a pastor of the
Reformed Church and Marguerite (“Leonhard Euler,” 2023). He had two younger sisters, Anna Maria and
Maria Magdalena, and a younger brother, Johann Heinrich. After the birth of Leonhard, their family
moves to the Riehen, Switzerland. Then his father became a pastor in the local church.

Euler received schooling in mathematics from his father, who had taken courses from Jecob Bernoulli at
the University of Basel. Around the age of eight, Euler was enrolled in the Latin school in Basel. In 1720,
Euler enrolled at the University of Basel. Then he met Johann Bernoulli, the younger brother of the
deceased Jacob Bernoulli who taught Euler’s father. At this time, he obtained his father’s consent to
become a mathematician instead of pastor.

Euler is credited with using closed curves to illustrate syllogistic reasoning. Those diagrams are known as
Euler diagrams. They were incorporated as part of instruction in set theory as a new math movement in
the 1960s. Since then, they have been used widely as a way of visualizing combinations of
characteristics. (Rodgers, 2014)

Euler found ways to express various logarithmic functions using power series. He defined the exponential
function for complex numbers and discovered its relation to trigonometric functions and it is known as

On 7th of January 1734, Eler married Katharina Gsell (1707-1773), the daughter of Georg Gsell, a painter
from the Academy Gymnasium in Saint Petersburg. Only five were survived childhood among their
thirteen children. Three years after his wife’s death in 1773, Euler married her half-sister, Salome Abigail
Gsell (1723-1794). In St. Petersburg on 18 th September 1783, after lunch with his family, he was
discussing about newly found planet when he collapsed and died from a brain hemorrhage.
