Digital Technologies: Hardware Skills Overview

The document provides information about a Level 4 digital technologies course covering core digital hardware skills and technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloud computing. It outlines two learning outcomes of developing hardware skills and problem solving/presentation abilities. The course content includes basic hardware components, cloud computing, and technologies. An assignment involves a group presentation on a cloud-based solution. Further sections provide details on hardware components of a motherboard, the CPU, and how the CPU works through fetch and execute cycles.

SHOW COLLABORATION AND TEAM WORKING PRINCIPLES IN
APPLYING PROBLEM SOLVING AND PRESENTATION SKILLS TO
PRESENT SOLUTIONS FOR BOTH COMPUTING AND THE
WIDER BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
• Mode of Assignment
A Group presentation of a Cloud based solution (duration
30 minutes) - 30%
Basic Hardware Components
Learning Outcomes

1. At the end of this lesson you should be able to

1. TO Identify components of a Computer motherboard
2. Understand the functionality of the internal componets
3. List down steps of Machine Cycle
The motherboard

● The backbone of the computer

● A printed circuit board (PCB) that

contain electrical pathways to
interconnect electrical components

● a.k.a the system board / mainboard

Components in a modern motherboard

● CPU slot
The connector on the
motherboard that houses
a CPU and forms the
electrical interface and
contact with the CPU.
Components in a modern motherboard

● Memory / RAM slot

(Random Access Memory)
A memory slot, memory
socket, or RAM slot is
what allows RAM
(computer memory) to be
inserted into the
computer.
Components in a modern motherboard
● Expansion slot
A socket on the motherboard that is used to insert an
expansion card (or circuit board), which provides
additional features to a computer such as video, sound,
advanced graphics, Ethernet or memory
○ Video card.
○ Network card
○ Sound card
○ Modem

Components in a modern motherboard

● Chipset
An Integrated circuit that
controls the interaction of
hardware with CPU and
motherboard.

I.e. Manages the data flow

between the processor,
memory and peripherals.
Components in a modern motherboard

● The Back Panel

The portion of the motherboard that allows you to
connect external devices, such as your monitor,
speakers, keyboard, and mouse.
Port Types of a computer
The CPU

● Abbreviated form of Central Processing Unit

● The brain of the computer where most

calculations take place

● Uses the Von Neumann design

The Internal Processor Bus

● a.k.a Front Side bus / System

bus
○ Data bus
■ Carries data that need to be
processed
■ Bi-directional
■ 8,16,32 or 64 bits

○ Address bus
■ Determines where data should be sent
■ Uni-directional
■ 16,32,64 or 128 bits

○ Control bus
■ What should be done with the data in
the selected memory location
■ Ex: Read, Write, Interrupt
How does the CPU work?

● By the FETCH / EXECUTE cycle

● The cycle has 4 main areas

○ Fetch - retrieve instructions from
HDD and store in a temporary
location (Registers)
○ Decode - decides what should be
done to the fetched information
○ Execute - actual data processing
takes place here
○ Store
