COURSE: ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY II
Course Code:
Credit Hours: 2(2, 0)
Instructor : Nida Jawad
Email: nidajawad@[Link]
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The main purpose of this course is to develop knowledge and understanding of the
context/environment and its influences on the practice of design. The students will learn about the
sustainable and passive design principles. Students will attend two hours of class each week as
given in the timetable. Related videos will be shared with students to gain practical knowledge and
identification of different aspects of environment. Assignments will be given to follow up on
different topics which will be evaluated solely based on the achievement of specific given
objectives. Quiz and examination will also be given to assess the learning and understanding of
each student.
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
THE COURSE IMPARTS KNOWLEDGE REGARDING CONTEXT/ ENVIRONMENT AND ITS INFLUENCE ON
THE PRACTICE OF DESIGN.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF CONTEXT /ENVIRONMENT AND THEIR IMPACT ON
BUILDING DESIGNS.
TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF BUILDINGS ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND LEARN TECHNIQUES TO
MITIGATE THESE INFLUENCES.
THE COURSE ATTEMPTS TO BUILD A KNOWLEDGE OF DIFFERENT PASSIVE TECHNIQUES AND
POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS IN DESIGN.
TO RECOGNIZE THE DIFFERENT SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ETHICAL ASPECTS OF USE OF ENERGY IN
BUILDINGS.
Methodology:
• Online Lectures as and when needed.
• Related Videos
• Study of texts references.
• Student/Teacher interaction at a one-to-one level.
Course Evaluation and Grading Systems:
All work done by the students shall be awarded marks percent and total marks shall be distributed as follows:
First sessional 10
Second Sessional 15
Quiz and Assignments 25
Final Exam 50
Absents from presentations, missing submission deadlines and late submission will result in zero or negative
grades.
Submissions and Referencing:
All paper and sketch books used shall be A series i.e. A4, A3. Any deviation may be penalized. Submissions of
all projects/reports must be proper and bound with the following components unless otherwise specified:
• Name of Department, course, student, teacher, title and date.
• All photos/graphics or tables must be annotated and duly credited. Acknowledgements as required.
• All reports, assignments must be written in student’s own words, ‘copy and paste’ is considered as
cheating/plagiarism.
• All bibliographic references to books and even websites must be made in a proper manner.

WHAT IS ECOLOGY?
Organisms
Species
Population
Community
Ecosystem
Biosphere
MAJOR COMPONENTS OF ECOLOGY
ORGANISMS:
Every living thing is an organism
SPECIES:
a group of animals, plants or other living things that all share
common characteristics
POPULATION:
all the organisms of the same group or species
COMMUNITY:
a group of organisms in the same environment that interact with
one another.
ECOSYSTEM:
a geographic area where plants, animals, and other organisms, as
well as weather and landscape, work together to form a life
ECOSYSTEM:
Biotic factors include plants, animals, and other organisms.
Abiotic factors include sunlight, rocks, temperature, and
humidity.
BIOSPHERE:
the portion of Earth where life occurs
The basic difference between ecology and environment is that the
environment is everything in the world while ecology is the study
of those.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ECOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENT:
“All the living and nonliving factors affecting an organism and
ultimately determining its form and survival is known as
Environment.”
“All the external factors influencing the life and activity of people,
plant and animals”.
“All the things (i.e. Object & Circumstances) surrounding us is
known as Environment”
WHAT IS ENVIRONMENT:
Environmental Science: “The systematic & scientific study of our
environment and our role in it. This branch includes the knowledge
of Pure science & to some extent Social Sciences”.
Environmental Studies: “The branch of Study concerned with
environmental issues. It has a broader coverage than environment
science and includes the social aspects of the environment”.
WHY DO WE STUDY ABOUT ENVIRONMENT?
This study will enlighten us about the importance of protection
and conservation of our environment.
Environmental education is intended to promote among citizens
the awareness and understanding of the environment, our
relationship to it, and the concern and responsible action
necessary to assure our survival and to improve the quality of life.
IMPORTANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES:
Pollution,
Global warming,
Ozone layer depletion,
Acid rain,
Natural resource depletion,
Overpopulation,
Waste disposal,
Deforestation and Loss of biodiversity
MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS:
POLLUTION:
Harmful materials into the environment
Causes of Global Warming:
• Natural Causes
• Ozone Layer Depletion
• Acidic Rain
• Depletion of Natural Resources
• Over Population
• Waste Disposal
• Deforestation
• Loss of Biodiversity
GLOBAL WARMING:
It is also known as climate change, is caused by a blanket of
pollution that traps heat around the earth.
Natural Causes
Ozone depletion, gradual thinning of Earth's ozone layer in the upper
atmosphere caused by the release of chemical compounds containing
gaseous chlorine or bromine from industry and other human activities.
Ozone Layer Depletion:
Acidic Rain
Natural Resources Depletion:
Over population:
Waste Disposal:
Deforestation:
Deforestation and Urbanization
Loss of Biodiversity:
Role of Architects to make environment better
Design for Environment focus on efforts by producers and manufacturers to reduce
Product or process impact on the environment.
Development Activity:
• Choosing Appropriate Materials
• Examining the product usage phase to reduce environmental impact
• Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources
• Protecting residents’ health and improving people’s productivity
• Reducing waste, pollution, and environmental degradation
