Steel Connection Design Examples

The document discusses two examples of structural steel connections. The first example calculates suitable bolt sizes for a connection subjected to tensile and compressive forces. The second example calculates the maximum tensile load a connection can withstand based on the capacity of a fillet weld and bolt sizes.

Connections

Class Example 8.1

Consider the connection shown below. A force of 𝐶𝐶𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢 = 20 kN and 𝐶𝐶𝑢𝑢𝑢𝑢 = 200 kN is applied. All
the plates for the connection are 20mm thick.

Connections

Class Example 8.2

Consider the drawing of a tension connection as shown below. The connection is subjected to a
tensile force (Tu) as shown in the figure. Answer the following:
(a) Calculate the maximum size of the load Tu as based on the capacity of the fillet weld that
connects the gusset plate to the column flange. [10]
(b) Calculate the maximum size of the load Tu as based on the capacity of the bolts that
connect the two angle sections to the gusset plate i.e. consider only the bolt shear and
bolt bearing resistances. [7]
