Talented Spanish scholar Wenceslao E. Retana formerly served as a publicity
representative for the friars in Spain. He used to criticize the Filipinos, particularly
Rizal, in a number of Spanish cities' publications, including Madrid.
2. Discuss briefly, with whom Rizal sought for help upon arrival in Madrid to get
justice for his family?
Rizal promptly enlisted the aid of the Filipino colony, the Asociacion Hispano-
Filipina, and the liberal Spanish newspapers (La Justicia, El Globo, La Republica, El
Resumen, etc.) after arriving in Madrid to assist bring justice to the oppressed
tenants of Calamba, including his family. He met with the Minister of Colonies
(Seor Fabie), accompanied by M.H. del Pilar (who served as his attorney), and Dr.
Dominador Gomez, secretary of the Asociacion Hispano-Filipina, to express his
disapproval of the injustices done to the Calamba people by Governor General
Valeriano Weyler and the Dominicans.
3. Explain briefly why Antonio Luna was bitter at Rizal and made unsavory remarks
about Nellie?
Luna was resentful due of his unsuccessful affair with Nellie Boustead. He was
secretly blaming Rizal for his inability to win her over, despite the fact that Rizal
had earlier told him that he had nothing to do with it. Luna made some derogatory
comments about Nellie during a furious rage that his alcohol-impaired mind was
unable to manage.
4. What is the terrible news that reached Rizal from his sister Saturnina?
He found out about Paciano (Rizal), Antonino's expulsion through his sister
Saturnina (Lopez). These unlucky deportees were captured at Calamba and sent
from Manila on September 6, 1890, to Mindoro as Silvestre (Ubaldo), Teong
(Mateo Elejorde), and Dandoy (a relative of Dr. Rizal).
