Understanding Numerology Basics

Numerology is the study of the metaphysical properties of numbers. According to ancient traditions, numbers predate mathematics and were discovered through human evolution and awareness. Numerology can reveal insights about a person's talents, weaknesses, challenges and life path based on the numerical values of the letters in their names. A person's first name represents the part of their true self expressing in the current lifetime, while other name components reveal talents from past lives and familial influences. Interpreting the numbers requires both objective computation and subjective intuitive analysis to gain a deeper understanding.

HOW NUMEROLOGY WORKS

According to the Toltec perspective, numerology is the study of universal vibrations.

All of life and all of what we regard as being matter is composed of vibration. It is an
ancient truism that numbers were not invented by man and neither were the letters of
the alphabet. Instead man gradually discovered numbers through the evolution of
awareness, and learned how to use them through trial and error. In other words, true
numerology by far predates mathematics.

A knowledge of the relationships inherent within numbers forms the esoteric

foundation of all true religions. The truth of this was recognised by Plato, when he
said: “God geometrizes continually.”

We can use numerology to reveal the unique vibration of our name, and thus gain
valuable and meaningful information about us, our talents, our weaknesses - in short,
everything that makes us tick.

Through a knowledge of numbers we learn how to build upon our hidden strengths,
and how to transform our weaknesses. We discover the nature of our main challenges
in life, as well as our life cycles, and the hidden resources we can draw upon when
facing severe challenges.

Therefore, the Toltec approach to numbers, as opposed to commonly-understood

fortune-telling, enables one to gain a deeper insight into oneself, one’s life and the
forces that are at work in one’s life.

However, in common with most ancient systems, there is an overt, as well as a hidden
meaning to numbers. Therefore, in numerology each number has an everyday
meaning, which is called the exoteric meaning, and it also has a subjective and far
deeper meaning, which is called the esoteric meaning. This esoteric meaning is very
closely related to the tarot cards.

We understand that anyone wishing to benefit from Astrology needs to know more
than just their sun sign - they need to know a lot of detail surrounding their birthchart.
So with Numerology, one needs to learn; first, how to draw up a proper and detailed
Numeroscope, and secondly, how to interpret this in a manner that is true to the
person concerned. It is simply not enough to say that “I am an 8,” without knowing
exactly how that 8 is derived, as well as a lot more detail that can ONLY be
subjectively worked out through the relationships of all the numbers together.

The Numbers

When we come to look at the numbers it is important to remember that the vowels in
numerology represent qualities pertaining to the driving force that gives rise to the
evolution of awareness; namely, inherent awareness. The vowels are therefore
collectively referred to as the indicators of the Soul Urge. The Soul Urge shows
what the person concerned came into this lifetime to accomplish, in terms of gaining
new experience and therefore new knowledge. This is the true Self that has incarnated
for the purpose of evolving its awareness, and which is not outwardly visible to others
until such time as the person concerned starts to develop him or herself in terms of
gaining new knowledge.

The consonants in numerology represent qualities pertaining to the expression of the

indwelling life within that form upon the physical plane known as the persona, or the
mask of the true Self. The consonants are therefore collectively referred to as
the indicators of the Personality Type. The Personality Number shows what the
person is like upon the physical plane, including abilities, weaknesses and likes and
dislikes. This is the personality of the person concerned, known as the little self, (as
opposed to the true Self), and which is well known to everyone around him or her.

The sum of the vowels and the consonants reveal the intended result of the
interdependent and therefore the interactive relationship between the Soul Urge and
the Personality Type, and this is therefore termed the Interrelationship Number, or
more commonly, the Destiny Number. The Destiny Number shows how the
person’s life is going to unfold in terms of gaining the new knowledge that
is required. It is quite literally what is termed the script of the person’s life upon the
physical plane from birth until death.

Your Names

In numerology your first name, commonly known as your Christian name, is the real
YOU in this lifetime. In other words, it is that part of your true Self which is giving
expression to itself through you. Therefore your first name shows us what your talents
are, as well as your limitations.

So whilst your Soul Urge shows us what your true Self wants to learn in this lifetime,
your first name shows us who you already are.

Your middle name shows us the specific talents and strengths you gained in previous
lifetimes, and which you now bring with you to help with the challenges you have to
face in this lifetime. In most cases these talents and strengths from previous lifetimes
manifest as latent potential, which unfolds more or less automatically as you grow up
and start having more and more life’s experience, as opposed to your unrealised
potential, shown in your Soul Urge, which takes time and effort to materialise.

In the case of people having more than one middle name, the middle names are added
together. In the case of people who have no middle name, we work exclusively with
the Birthpath to determine what knowledge and skills are brought forward from
previous lifetimes.

The last name, commonly termed the family name, or the surname, is what you inherit
from the family you were born into. This inheritance includes talents, strengths,
weaknesses and challenges inherent within your family. It also includes challenges
related to your family that have never been resolved since they first appeared amongst
some of your predecessors, and therefore have been handed down from generation to
generation. This is the meaning of the statement in the Christian Bible; “visiting the
inequity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.”
In the case of double-barrelled surnames the two names are taken as one name, and
are treated as one name.

What your Names Reveal

As we have just seen, your Soul Urge is the real you and it shows us what you need
to learn in this lifetime. Your first name shows us the part of the real you that is going
to be doing the learning within this lifetime.

These words can be confusing, for many people may wonder what is meant by a
“part” of the real you? Let’s look at this.

We learn lifetime after lifetime, and each time we incarnate we follow the script we
have written for ourselves. But realise that no single lifetime is ever long enough to
learn absolutely everything surrounding our lessons. So in practice we never really
finish our learning, no matter how dedicated we may be. Very often in our learning
we will excel in one area, whilst we may struggle with our lessons in another area. So
whenever we reincarnate we either continue with the lessons we started in
the previous lifetime but did not finish, or we focus on those lessons with which we
struggled.

Yet if we consider how vast life is, and how much there is for us to learn, it stands to
reason that in order not to scatter ourselves, and to avoid taking on too many different
areas of learning and thereby stretching ourselves too thin, we need to choose our
lessons very carefully, by focusing on what is most needed in terms of us evolving
our awareness successfully. It follows that we never bring all of our evolving selves
with us when we reincarnate. Instead, we bring with us only that part of ourselves
which needs to be worked on in this lifetime.

For example, we either incarnate as males or as females. But when we incarnate as a

female we do not also bring with us all of our knowledge concerning what it is to be
male, and neither do we write into our scripts lessons to do with being a
male. Likewise, unless we need to learn the lessons involved in being an adopted
child, we will not write such lessons into our script, and neither will we bring with us
any knowledge we may already have concerning this. And if we have to learn about
the corporate world, we will not write into our script lessons
concerning entrepreneurial pursuits, even though we may have a great deal
of knowledge concerning being an entrepreneur. And so on.

So when we say that your first name shows us the part of the real you that is going to
be doing the learning within this lifetime, we are referring to the real character you
are in this lifetime, together with the knowledge you already have as this character, as
well as the limitations of your knowledge. Yet as we know, you have also written for
yourself a script, and this script is revealed in your Destiny Number, which tells us
how you are going to learn the lessons you need to learn in this lifetime. And, just as
happens on the stage, where every character also needs a personality to act out the
script written for it, so in your case this personality is, of course, revealed in your
Personality Number.
Esoteric numerology can rightfully be termed a science as well as an art. This is
because in esoteric numerology we first of all set out the computation and the
analysis. These are objective scientific procedures. But we then move on to the
interpretation, which is very much an art, in that the depth to which composite
numbers are analysed is very much dependent upon the subjective intuitive approach,
based upon the laws of cosmology.

Esoteric numerology involves scientific elements, such as computation and analysis, adhering to objective numerical procedures, and artistic elements, such as subjective interpretation. The depth of analysis is influenced by cosmological laws and the intuitive approach, which makes the understanding deeply personal and dependent on the numerologist's insight. This combination ensures that each chart is unique to the individual and richly informative when interpreted skillfully .

The Toltec belief system suggests that numbers were not invented by humans but were discovered through an evolving awareness over time. This discovery, achieved through trial and error, allowed humans to understand and utilize universal vibrations inherent in numbers. These numbers form the esoteric foundation of true religious understanding and are integral in interpreting the cosmos and one’s life path .

Reincarnation influences numerology charts by dictating that only certain parts of a person's evolving self are brought into each lifetime. This approach helps in focusing learning on specific areas of need, based on past life lessons, unfinished business, or struggles. Hence, a numerology chart interprets which lessons an individual needs to learn in this specific lifetime, avoiding scattering efforts and enhancing the evolution of awareness without overwhelming the individual's growth .

In numerology, one’s last name represents the family inheritance, including both positive talents and latent challenges that a person inherits. These challenges are often unresolved issues that have been passed down through generations, influencing the individual's life path and character development. Such inherited aspects need to be addressed within their life script as interpreted through their numerology reading .

In numerology, vowels represent the Soul Urge, which pertains to the inherent awareness and personal desires of the true Self aiming to gain new experiences and knowledge in this lifetime. Consonants, on the other hand, represent the Personality Type, which describes the persona or mask of the true Self manifested in the physical plane, including abilities and traits visible to others. Together, the sum of vowels and consonants forms the Destiny Number, indicating the intended life path and the interdependent relationship between inner desires and outward expression .

Numerological values reveal the personal script or life lessons by indicating the paths and challenges predefined for an individual’s existence. The Destiny Number, a synthesis of vowels and consonants in one's name, details this life script, illustrating how life is expected to unfold and which lessons are prioritized. Each numerical aspect, from the Soul Urge to Personality Number, integrates into this personalized roadmap of growth and learning .

The Toltec perspective categorizes the meanings of numbers in numerology into exoteric and esoteric meanings. The exoteric meaning pertains to everyday, outward interpretations of numbers, while the esoteric meaning involves deeper, more subjective interpretations related to the universal vibrations underlying all matter and life. This esoteric meaning in numerology is closely related to the tarot cards, which also deal with symbolic and metaphorical understanding of life's patterns .

In numerology, a person's first name is seen as representing the real individual in this lifetime. It reveals the innate talents and limitations as well as the part of the true Self that engages in learning within this life. This contrasts with the middle name, which indicates talents and strengths from past lives, often manifesting as latent potentials, and the last name, which symbolizes familial inheritances such as talents and unresolved challenges spanning generations .

According to Toltec beliefs in numerology, individuals can confront challenges by understanding the unique vibrations and relationships within numbers. Through constructing a detailed Numeroscope and interpreting its insights, one can identify their hidden strengths and weaknesses, their life cycles, and the resources available for addressing challenges. Numerology helps transform weaknesses and build upon strengths, advocating for a deeper self-insight to navigate life's complexities .

Constructing a Numeroscope involves interpretative challenges due to the depth and complexity of relationships between numbers in a person's numerology chart. The accuracy of a Numeroscope heavily relies on synthesizing the interplay of numbers, such as deriving individual numbers and understanding their esoteric meanings comprehensively. Furthermore, subjective intuition in interpreting these numbers can vary, affecting the precision and insightful application of the Numeroscope in revealing personal truths and life paths .
