ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF FISHES
Usefulness:
1. Protein Value: Fish Flesh contains 15-30% of protein. Fisheries produce
about 35% of the world’s animal protein. Fish protein is superior to egg,
milk and beef protein.
2. Nutritional Value: Fish meal contains all the ten essential amino acids and
is also an important source of Ca, P, K, Fe, Cu and Vit. A and D.
3. Trade and Industry: As the fish forms a rich source of food, millions of
people are engaged in fishing industry and depends on fisheries for their
livelihood in various ways.
4. Alternative feed value: Fish can be fed as the alternative feed instead of
feeding cereal grains and legumes as fish can fulfill the deficiencies that are
seen with them.
5. Fish as Food of Cattle: The fish meal contains about 60% protein and high
percentage of calcium phosphate so that it is very valuable for cattle and
poultry.
6. FISH BY-PRODUCT :
a) Fish oil: From the liver of the many fishes oil is extracted.
i) Cod liver oil: It is extracted from the cod fishes.
ii) Shark liver oil: It is extracted from the liver of the shark. These oils contain A
and D vitamins.
iii) Bombay duck oil: The Extracted oil from Bombay duck is used in Paints.
b) Fish flour: It is a superior quality of fish meal considered as an ideal
protein source to supplement to diets of both adults and infant animals.
c) Fish silage: This is a liquid to semi-solid type of highly nutritive
animal feed produced by acid process.
d) Fish manure and Guano: fish manure is the byproduct of fish glue
industry and fish oil industry. Fish Guano is byproduct of fish body oil
extraction industries..
e) Fish Glue: This is obtained from trimmings, bones and skin of fish.
f) Isinglass: It acts as a gelatin substitute in confectionary industry. It swells
in cold water, but does not dissolve in it.
g) Fish pearls: The material obtained by scraping the silvery coating of the
scales of certain fishes is used for polishing the hollow glass beds. These
beds are then filled with wax and marketed as artificial pearls which are
used as jewelry.
h) Fish fin: The fins of the sharks and rays are used to make tasteful sauce
and soups. It is a popular soup item of Chinese cuisine usually served at
special occasions such as weddings and banquets, or as a luxury item in
Chinese culture.
i) Fish meal: Many fishes are dressed and cooked. Then they are dried. Fishes are
made into fine powder. This is called fish meal. It is used by weak and convalsent
people.
j) Fertilizers: The ‘fish waste’ materials have more calcium, protein, phosphorous
and other substances. These materials are grined into powder. It is used as fertilizer
to Grape gardens, Coffee and Tea plants.
7. Use of Fish in Medicine: Fish are used to extract Insulin. Besides fish are
generally low in sugar content and they can be relished by Diabeteic
patients. Fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which can be used in treatment of
asthma,cancer,dementia;depression,prematurity and cardiovascular
diseases.
8. Game or recreational Value: Fishing is an important outdoor activity for a
lot of people.
9. Ornamental Value: Fish aquariums and displays kept in the house and
workplace offers an ornamental value.
[Link] control: Fish species such as the Gambusia are used in the
control of mosquito population.
[Link] Leather: Skin of fishes like the Cod, Salmon, Sharks etc are used to
make leather and leather products which have durable, flexible and
ornamental value.
[Link] in Rural Development: Small-scale fish farming can be done in the
rural areas to improve life standard of rural fisherman.
[Link] on Migration: Jobs generated through fishing like production,
processing, transport and marketing can be expected to control, to some
extent, the drift of rural people to urban areas.
[Link] social benefit: Fish farming in a community aims at the priorities of the
community. It helps to attain the knowledge of human, economic and socio-
infrastructural development.
[Link] opportunities: Crop-farming farmers nowadays produce fish
side by side to their crops. More over fish farming projects have advantage
of being more widely distributed geographically, and locally owned,
enabling improved income distribution among the population.
16. Scientific Study:
Fishes have considerable use as experimental animals, especially in the
fields of Genetics, Embryology, Animal Behaviour and Pharmacology.
Harmfulness:
1. Destructive:
All the cartilaginous fishes are predaceous and feed chiefly on large quantities
of crabs, lobsters, squids and other valuable marine animals. Carnivorous fishes
eat away the larvae of useful insects.
2. Injurious:
Some larger sharks and sword fish may capsize small boats and injure or even
kill fisherman.
Some fishes like cartilaginous electric ray (Torpedo) have electric organs which
give powerful shocks to swimmers and fishermen.
3. Poisonous:
Poisonous glands are found in many cartilaginous fishes such as sting ray
(Trygon) and eagle ray (Myliobatis). They can inflict painful wounds,
sometimes fatal by the poisonous stings or spines. These are also capable of
causing wounds by their spines or spiny opercula .
