SWK 122 S2 2020 Mechanics Tutorial 2

1) Students are instructed to complete worksheet problems from lecture units 1.1 and 1.2, as well as homework problems from those units listed in the study guide, before the tutorial class. 2) Answers to the problems can be found in the back of the textbook or study guide. 3) Students must submit the completed worksheet online through the clickUP system within 24 hours of the tutorial, with only one attempt allowed. They should read evaluation instructions in the study guide.

Tutorial 2

• Complete the Lecture Units 1.1 and 1.2 worksheet problems which were discussed in the
lectures.
• Do the homework problems listed in the self study activities of Lecture Units 1.1 and 1.2 in
the study guide before the tutorial class.
• The answers to these problems are either in the back of your textbook or in the back of the
study guide (pages 41 and 44).

Submit the worksheet online via clickUP. You can prepare for the submission by working
beforehand through the questions below and consult the tutor team with problems that you en-
counter. When you open the tutorial worksheet on clickUP, you will get a unique set of values
for the variables in your questions. You have 24 hours to complete the online tutorial (1 attempt
only). Please read through the “clickUP Evaluation” section in the study guide (pages 50 – 53)
and ensure you comply with all the instructions.

Remember to click “Submit” after you type in every answer; your answers will only be
finalised when you click “End Exam”. The system will not complete the submission
on your behalf.

Question 1
Consider the force system below. Use geometry and find

(a) the components of F 2 parallel to F 1 and F 3 .

(b) the components of F 1 parallel to F 2 and F 3 .

F1 = 900 N

Remarks:

• The components of F 2 parallel to F 1 and F 3 are two vectors (i) C 1 parallel to F 1 and
(ii) C 3 parallel to F 3 so that F 2 = C 1 + C 3

• In general C 1 6= F 1 and C 3 6= F 3 .
Question 2
The three forces F1 = 0.8 kN , F2 = 0.6 kN and F3 act on particle P as in the sketch. Determine
the magnitude and orientation of F3 so that the resulting force has a magnitude of 1 kN and the
magnitude of F3 is a maximum.

Consulting the tutor team helps in clarifying misconceptions, gaining expert insights, and ensuring correct application of mechanics principles, which is critical in complex problems where intuition alone might not be sufficient. Tutors provide guidance that enhances understanding and correctness in submissions .

To maximize the magnitude of the resultant force, F3 must be oriented such that it counteracts the component of the resultant of F1 and F2 that is not collinear with the desired resultant direction of 1 kN. The angle θ of F3 relative to F1 and F2 needs to be calculated to ensure that the vector sum achieves maximal magnitude and correct resultant direction .

Providing unique variable values ensures that students engage with their specific problem set, preventing direct copying and encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving. It allows for individualized assessment of understanding and application skills, as each student must independently work through the problem-solving process .

The system requires students to actively submit each answer and click 'End Exam' to confirm their attempt, indicating the necessity of student initiative. This ensures that students verify their responses and submission readiness before finalizing, reducing errors or unintentional submissions of incomplete exams .

Key considerations for successful submission on clickUP include understanding the unique set of variable values provided, adhering to the 24-hour completion window, and following the submission instructions such as clicking 'Submit' after entering each answer and 'End Exam' to finalize the submission. Failing to do these steps may prevent the system from completing the submission .

The process teaches students to break down complex systems into simpler components, analyze relationships, and consider multiple factors and constraints. These skills are transferable to many disciplines, promoting logical reasoning, precision, and systematic problem-solving, which are valuable in analytic thinking and decision-making contexts .

Using geometry to find force components in mechanics illustrates how forces can be analyzed and resolved in practical scenarios, such as in construction or machinery, where forces act in non-standard directions. This approach helps in understanding the influence of each force component in designing stable systems or structures, ensuring that forces are managed effectively without risking overloading parts of the system .

C1 and C3 are components of F2 along the directions of F1 and F3, respectively, and not the forces themselves. This means they are projections of F2 on these directions and depend on the angles between the forces. Therefore, they are only equal to F1 and F3 if F2 exactly aligns with one or the other, which is not generally the case in these problems .

The structure, with its strict 24-hour completion window and one-attempt limit, requires students to effectively plan and allocate their time to understand the material and address any problems before submission. Students must also prioritize their workflow to ensure they complete and submit all answers correctly within the given timeframe without system errors .

Understanding the relationship between angles and force components is critical because the components of a force along different directions depend on the cosine and sine of the angles between those directions and the original force. This understanding allows for correct decomposition of vector forces into desired components, crucial for correctly solving for equilibrium or resultant forces in such systems .
