SPIRIT TASTING RUBRICS

Commonly accepted criteria in spirits evaluation are: ‘Clarity’ or ‘Appearance’ and
‘Color,’ ‘Nose,’ ‘Taste,’ ‘Mouthfeel,’ (Alcohol) and ‘Finish.’ Since we will not be placing any
emphasis on the appearance, we are leaving it aside from the scoring process. We will include
a brief description of the ‘Appearance’ in our tasting notes. Mouthfeel is usually included in
‘Taste’ through in this system it is scored separately. These are divided into 10 different criteria
as follows:

ALCOHOL BY REDUCTION
In this criterion, spirits of 50% ₊ are awarded 10 points by default. Spirits reduced to lower
or standardized strengths either by time or the additional of water receive a slightly lower rank
as follows:
10 - 50% ₊
9 – 46-49 %
8 – 38-45 %
7 – 37.5 %
