V. PROCEDURES
You are a housemaid and your “amo” instructed you to take care of everything in
Introductory Activity the house for she will be out for an important business. After an hour, the baby
(5 minutes) cries, the water freely flows because the faucet is open, you need to keep the
laundry because it is about to rain, somebody knocks on the door and you are
cooking something that is about to get cooked. Which will you attend first?
Activity/Strategy Watch Me!
(30 minutes) 1. The class is divided into five (5) groups.
2. The students watch a documentary on “Why Poverty:Philippines”
3. They will answer the process questions and share it in front.

Process Questions:
1. What is the topic of the video?
2. What is the main argument of the author?
3. What are the evidences used by the author to support his/her arguments?
4. What is the stand of your group?
Analysis Process Questions:
(10 minutes) 1. Whose report you like the most? Why
2. Do you agree to the arguments presented in the video? Why? Why
not?
3. To which form of speech and writing can you compare “the way the
content is presented in the video”?

Abstraction A position paper is a type of academic writing that presents one’s stand or
(15 minutes) viewpoint on a particular issue
The main objective of writing a position paper is to take part in a larger debate by
stating your arguments and proposed course of action.
There are three parts of a position paper: introduction, body and conclusion.
Guidelines in Choosing an Issue
1. The issue should be debatable. You cannot take any position if the topic is
not debatable.
2. The issue should be current and relevant.
3. The issue should be written in a question form and answerable by yes or
no.
4. The issue should be specific and manageable.

carefully and analyse the arguments used by the writer/s.

Assessment Writing Activity
(Day 3) Context: Assume the persona of a delegate of your school to the annual convention
of student leaders in Asia who needs to take a stand on one of the issues being
confronted by the Filipino youth.

Steps to follow: (Guided Activity)


1. Generate as many ideas as possible using your preferred prewriting
activity. Write your ideas on a sheet of paper. (Day 3)
2. Develop your preliminary thesis statement. ( Day 3)
3. Conduct a preliminary research by getting the sources that you might need
for your position paper. (Assignment)
4. Prepare a preliminary outline. (Day 4)
5. Write the first draft of your position paper. (Assignment)
6. Revisit you drafts to clarify the major points and supporting details. (Day 5)
7. Exchange papers with your classmate for peer critiquing. (Guide Questions
are on page 255 of the material.) (Day 5)
8. Start revising your paper and prepare the final draft. (Day 6)

Guide in Writing Analysis

This argument analysis examines the article titled (title of the article) written by (author). This article is about
(briefly summarize the content of the article in 3 to 5 sentences). Specifically, this analysis identifies the position of the
author/s, his/her main arguments, and the evidence supporting these arguments. (Author) makes (number of claims)
and supports them with various pieces of evidence.

The first main argument is (state the argument in your own words). To support this argument, the author uses
(number of evidence presented). (State all the pieces of evidence presented by the author to support the first argument).
(State your analysis of the argument and evidence presented. When presenting your analysis you may use phrases
such as “first of all,” “the author assumes,” and “the author fails to consider.”)

In conclusion, the author (state the author’s purpose). I agree that (state the arguments of the author in which
you agree with). However, (state your major arguments).
