Problem statement
Quarry dust can be used effectively as a substitute for river sand. Both partial replacement and
full replacement of river sand should be made in order to investigate if the quality of concrete
can be improved. This includes the properties of concrete such as strength, workability and
durability.
Objective of problem
The main focus of this study, is the behaviour of concrete that partially replaces sand with
quarry dust and sand.
1. To study the workability of concrete using quarry dust.
2. To study the properties of the quarry dust.
3. To study the compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete with various
percentage replacement of quarry dust.
4. To achieve durability.
5. To achieve economy by selecting appropriate concrete ingredients.
Literature Review
According to Vijayalakshmi et. al. (2013) investigated the effect of replacement of river sand
with granite powder on workability of concrete at a replacement level from 0% to 25%. They
observed that there is a decrease in workability of concrete with increase in substitution rate.
Very poor workability was observed in the concrete mixtures with 20% and 25% substitution
rate. They concluded that this decrease in workability is due to the difference of particle size
3
distribution, particle shape and surface texture between river sand and granite powder. Granite
powder was very fine as compared to natural sand with 90% particles finer than 50 micron,
which increased the specific surface area of fine aggregate, consequently increasing the water
demand.
According to Singh et. al. (2016) investigated the effect of replacement of natural sand with
granite cutting waste on workability of concrete at a replacement level form 0% to 40%. They
observed that there is a significant decline in the workability of concrete with the increase in
replacement of natural sand with granite cutting waste. They concluded that this decline in
workability of concrete is due to the enhanced friction between the concrete particles as a
result of the fact that granite cutting waste has
Methodology of implementation of project
This chapter focuses on the methodologies and materials used during conducting research and
also will show the different variability, the methods of curing that has been applied for the
investigation of the suitability of quarry stone dust as sand replacing material in concrete
production. The types of tests, mix proportions and the methods of analysis used has also
presented in the chapter.
It’s intended to perform various task in order to come up with reliable data and these task
include: obtaining samples of fine aggregates natural sand quarry wastes, gradation for the
fines and coarse aggregates carry out specific gravity test on both samples prepare samples to
be used for determination of workability and compressive strength.
Utilization of project results
After collecting the required experimental data, the compressive strength and densities of
4
specimens was analyzed based on the mean average method and based on the ES and or BS
strength requirement comparison has been carried out and the suitability of the stone dust has
been checked based on available standards and specifications.
The raw material used in the production of cement sand blocks are Ordinary Portland cement
(OPC), sand, and water. Meanwhile, quarry dust was used as sand replacement material in this
study.
The following sub-section has discussed the collection of raw materials and processes applied
to produce cement.

Conclusion
This research paper was aiming on a study on the suitability of quarry stone dust/waste as an
alternative to sand replacing material and starting from site investigation, a number of
experiments and tests has been conducted on the physical properties of both the natural river
6
sand and the quarry stone dust/waste. Based on the experimental test results and findings of
the study the following conclusion has been drawn.
From the site investigation, the researcher confirmed that they are currently used for supplying
hard core and coarse aggregates. Even though there are such a number of quarry sites, an
extensive study must be conducted on the properties of those rocks for their further utilization
to the Ethiopian construction. The physical property test results obtained indicates that quarry
waste sand has nearly similar in almost all the properties except a little difference on the
fineness modulus results, in which the FM of quarry dust/waste is a little higher that of natural
river sand, which it indicates quarry stone dust/waste is coarser than natural river sand.
From the Hardened properties (Compressive strength) test results obtained, the compressive
strength recorded of the specimens it can be concluded that quarry stone dust/waste can
replaced natural river sand up to 35% without breaching the available local and international
standards. A separate study was conducted on the use of this studied quarry stone dust/waste
in production of Compressed Stabilized Earthen Block (CSEB), it has showed a promising result
as it will be replace up to 90%.
