Understanding Indirect Variation in Math

This document provides information about indirect variations. It explains that an indirect variation is a relationship between two variables where their product remains constant. The general form of an indirect variation can be expressed as xy=k, where x and y are the variables and k is the constant of variation. It gives an example of the time taken (y) to complete a task varying indirectly with the number of workers (x), and shows how to calculate y for different values of x using the indirect variation equation.

An indirect varia on is a rela onship between two variables, where the product of the
variables remains constant. In other words, as one variable increases, the other variable
decreases by a consistent factor, and vice versa.
The general form of an indirect varia on can be expressed as:
xy=k
where:
 x and y are the two variables.
 k is the constant of varia on. It represents the product of x and y and remains the same
throughout the rela onship.
In an indirect varia on, if one variable becomes zero, the other variable will become undefined
because you can't divide by zero.
To iden fy an indirect varia on, you can check if the rela onship between the two variables
can be represented by the equa on xy=k.
Solving problems involving indirect varia ons o en includes finding the value of the constant
of varia on (k) or using the given value of k to find other related values.
Example: Let's say the me taken (y) to complete a task varies indirectly with the number of
workers (x) doing the task. If it takes 10 hours for one worker to complete the task, then the
indirect varia on equa on is:
xy=k
where k is the constant of varia on and equals 10×1=1010×1=10.
If two workers are doing the task, then the me taken (y) would be:

If five workers are doing the task, then the me taken (y) would be:
