 WEEKLY ROUTINE OVERVIEW
If you want to help your students transform into strong writers, they need to have a strong
understanding of sentence structure. Sentences are the building blocks of all the writing your
students will produce. Whether they are writing a response to something they read, a report for
science, or a personal narrative, they need to have a strong understanding of sentences in order
to make their writing effective and interesting.

This Sentence Writing Routine takes just a few minutes each day but includes a variety of
effective sentence activities that will help your students improve their understanding of
sentence structure and give them tools that will help them write more effective and interesting
sentences in their own writing.

Student responses will vary for each day of the routine. Encourage students to be creative,
imaginative, and descriptive when using the picture for inspiration.

Monday: Build a Sentence

• Every Monday, students will use the picture to build a sentence. They will be given a variety of
prompts like Who? Is doing what? When? Where? Why? and How? to help them craft the
sentence.

Tuesday: Writing a Variety of Sentences

• Every Tuesday, students will use the picture to write a variety of sentences. They will use the
details in the picture to inspire them to write a statement, question, command, and
exclamation.

Wednesday: Find the Fragment

• On Wednesday, students will read three statements/sentences. One of the sentences is a
fragment. Students will identify the fragment and then re-write the fragment to turn it into
a complete sentence.

Thursday: Combining Sentences

• On Thursday, students will read two sentences. They will combine the ideas in the two
sentences and form one sentence. In some instances students will have to combine the
sentences to form a simple sentence with a compound subject or compound predicate and in
other instances they will combine the sentences to form a compound sentence.

Friday: Sentence Scramble

• On Friday, student will get a set of scrambled words. They will have to unscramble the words
to form a correct sentence.

When can I use this routine?

You can use this routine as part of your writing block, reading block, morning routine, or anytime
you have a few focused minutes for your students to work on writing sentences. You can
complete it whole group or even use it with a select number of students during your small group

Read the three sentences below. One of them is a fragment. The other two are complete sentences. Place a
check mark by the complete sentences. Then correct the fragment.

Four friends learned how to bake.

Use the space below to complete the fragment.

Thursday: Combining Sentences

Read the sentences below. Think about how you can combine the ideas and write one sentence. If you need
help getting started, try creating a simple sentence with a compound subject.

Emma baked a cake. Jackson baked a cake.

Combined Sentence: Combine the ideas above and write one sentence below.

Friday: Sentence Scramble

Look at the words and phrases below. Can you unscramble them to form a sentence that connects to the
picture? Don’t forget to add punctuation and capitalize the correct letters.
