Mechanical Engineering Assessment Test

The document is a test from the University of Calabar assessing students on limits and fits, geometric tolerancing, and welding symbols from modules 1-2 of Engineering Drawing III. It contains two questions - the first asks students to calculate extreme diameters, tolerances, and maximum/minimum clearance given hole and shaft deviation values, and the second asks students to draw the welding symbol for a T-joint requiring specific fillet welds.

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
ENG 202: ENG. DRAWING III (MODULE 1 – 2) CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT TEST; 2019/2020 SESSION
AREAS COVERED BY MODULE (1 – 2): LIMITS & FIT; GEOMETRICAL TOLERANCING; WELDING SYMBOLS & DESIGN
INSTRUCTION: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS; TIME: FIFTY MINUTES (50 MINUTES)
1) A journal of nominal diameter 79 mm rotates in a bearing. The upper and lower deviation in hole diameter are 0.05
mm and - 0.00 mm, while those for the shaft are -0.03 mm and -0.07 mm respectively. Calculate the (a) Extreme
diameters of the hole and shaft (b) Tolerance of the hole and shaft indicating if unilateral or bilateral. (c) Maximum
and minimum clearance.
2) A client needs a component of a structure to be joined using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
process. The joint requires a 10 mm fillet weld on the other side of arrow Q and 6 mm fillet
weld on the arrow side. The length of the weld is to be 6 mm and a pitch of 10 mm as
illustrated in the figure. If the welding is to be done on site, use
the given information to provide a neat sketch of the welding
symbol on a T-joint required to do the job. Q
