TOPIC: DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ONLINE PROJECT
GRADING SYSTEM
Abstract
This project presents an Online Project Grading (OPG) System which was
designed to replace the current manual method of managing final year
students’ projects. This Web-based system will emerge the paradigm for
University project management. The manual system is messy and time
consuming with lack in efficiency. The main objective of this project is to
engage all parties in one collaborative online system systematically as a
medium of exchanging information for Final Year Project. Developing the
system involves the knowledge of web design, web setup, database
design, database setup and server setup. The OPG System will be
developed in an open source environment. Using Windows operating
system as the server platform, the system will utilize MySQL as its
database system and Apache as the Web server. The scripting language on
server side is PHP while HTML with JavaScript is written on client side.
Considering three user groups for OPG system, there will be different
interface and function for each group. Administrator will be managing the
system with the task of handling user registrations and accounts. User
verification will secure the system. This web enabled project management
and its associated features are strongly worth, feasible and relevance in
fulfilling the endeavors of the parties concerned.

Problem Statement
Currently, all project data and grades given are recorded on paper-based
forms saved in student’s individual folder. Such data storage and
processing causes delay when trying to search retrieve and analyze
students’ final year project data. Therefore, the department of Computer
Science requires a centralized way of processing grades and data for final
year students. The proponents of this study wish to reduce the workload of
supervisors by eliminating the need for manual computation and recording
of grades. The common problems encountered in manual recording and
computations are error in file handling and redundancy. Possibility of
repeating project topics without detection by a project supervisor.
Records of project topics carried out by a student are stored in the
departmental library for a long time which occupies valuable office space.
Difficulty in searching for project topics already done
Aims and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this study is to design and implement an information system to
support final year project assessment and management of the project after
completion.
To achieve this aim, the following objectives are carried out:
2
1. To analyze existing form of grading of final year student project in
the Department of Computer Science.
2. To design a computerized grading and storing system for Department
of Computer Science.
3. To implement the system for the Department of Computer Science.
4. To evaluate the system based on comparison with existing system.
Scope of the Study
This study will be carried out using the Computer Science Department of
Federal University Birnin Kebbi, as a case study. So every data used is
limited to this department.
